Four rescued from burst dinghy

4th June 2009

Four teenagers were rescued by the Dun Laoghaire RNLI Inshore lifeboat (ILB) on Dublin Bay today (Wednesday) after their inflatable beach dinghy became punctured and started to sink. None of the occupants wore a lifejacket. A member of the public spotted what was originally thought to be two persons but when the ILB arrived on scene, four youths were taken from the water on the rocks at the North Wall beside the entrance to the busy shipping lane at Dublin Port.

“This type of toy is totally unsuited for this environment,” commented Stephen Wynne, Lifeboat Operations Manager with Dun Laoghaire RNLI.  “It was clearly marked as being suitable for a maximum of two and a weight notexceeding 210 lbs - people need to be aware of the very real dangers of using such craft.”

The group had started out from Dollymount Strand but the North-Easterly wind had carried them away from the beach. The casualties were transferred to the Dublin Port Pilot boat at the scene and did not require medical treatment.
