Lifeboat rescues 'Betty Boop'

8th June 2009

When Betty Boop started to head to France on the race chart tracker when the rest of the fleet skirted the Cork coast heading west on 260 degrees it was either an extreme tactic like we've seen of late by the Green Dragon chaps or something was wrong. Could it be a dodgy transponder (see tracker image over the fold) giving an errant signal? Wrong!

As she approached the Tuskar Betty Boop, John Alvey's Puppeteer 330, lost her rudder and in spite of all efforts to resolve the matter she continued south on 156 degrees (see below), and the five crew ended up calling the Coastguard. Milford Haven Coastguard responded yesterday morning by sending the Welsh allweather 'Angle' Lifeboat out 65 miles to rendez vous with the Poolbeg entry and tow her back to safety at Dunmore East.
