Lifeboat rescues 'Betty Boop'

8th June 2009

When Betty Boop started to head to France on the race chart tracker when the rest of the fleet skirted the Cork coast heading west on 260 degrees it was either an extreme tactic like we've seen of late by the Green Dragon chaps or something was wrong. Could it be a dodgy transponder (see tracker image over the fold) giving an errant signal? Wrong!

As she approached the Tuskar Betty Boop, John Alvey's Puppeteer 330, lost her rudder and in spite of all efforts to resolve the matter she continued south on 156 degrees (see below), and the five crew ended up calling the Coastguard. Milford Haven Coastguard responded yesterday morning by sending the Welsh allweather 'Angle' Lifeboat out 65 miles to rendez vous with the Poolbeg entry and tow her back to safety at Dunmore East. We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
