Cork dominates Oppie trials

20th April 2010
Cork dominates Oppie trials
Trials season is in full swing at the moment, and the first leg of the Optimist trials was dominated by southern sailors at the weekend, with three Crosshaven sailors and one lone Kinsale sailor making up the top four. 66 boats took part in the seven-race series in Lough Derg.

The fleet joins with the other ISA pathway and Youth Worlds classes for the next leg of trials at the Mitsubishi Youth Regatta in Dun Laoghaire on the May bank holiday weekend, where more than 300 sailors are expected to take part in events.

Meanwhile, down in Dromineer, it was 13-year-old Peter McCann who built up a commanding lead over the fleet, with six top-three finishes in seven races. McCann is now sitting pretty a full 16 points clear of Seafra Guilfoyle at the top of the pack, with Sean Gambier-Ross making up the podium.

Full results are available on the IODAI site here.

The class, the biggest one-design fleet in the country, has negotiated a clever partnership deal with Craftinsure for this year, with a donation going to the class every time an Irish optimist is insured with the company.
