Irish Protest Ship Could Sail Again

Irish Protest Ship Could Sail Again

The blockade-breaking protest ship MV Rachel Corrie could be on the seas again within weeks, with reports that the Israeli authorities are ready to release the ship from Ashdod.

The Rachel Corrie carried Irish protesters as part of a wave of ships carrying humanitarian aid in an attempt to break Israel's naval blockade of Gaza. While the other ships were violently stormed, resulting in several deaths, the Corrie was taken into custody without loss of life.

When the ship was taken into port at the start of June, the protesters assume that they may never see it freed again. However, communications from the port authorities yesterday suggest that the owners of the ship, the Irish arm of the Free Gaza movement, can have the ship released if they can show that they have sufficient provisions and crew to reach another port.

The crew are unsure what they will do with the ship, but it is thought unlikely that it will return to Ireland.
