Irish Man Dies in New York Sailing Accident

An Irish man who fell overboard while sailing in the Long Island sound has died. Eoin Curran, 30, from Templeogue, was knocked overboard when his Sonar keelboat was hit by a squall. Curran was not wearing a lifejacket at the time, and although an instructor threw one to him he was separated from the boat quickly in the sudden stormy weather and was lost.

The sailboat was about one-half to three-quarters of a mile off Premium Point in New Rochelle when the squall hit around 3:15 p.m.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was providing consular assistance to Mr Curran's family.
