New Study to Put Figure on Marine Sector

23rd September 2009
New Study to Put Figure on Marine Sector

A high level project that aims to place an economic value on the marine sector is underway and firms in the sector have been contacted and asked to complete a confidential survey. The Marine Institute on behalf of the government are leading a ‘Marine Knowledge, Research and Innovation Strategy for Ireland 2007-2013’.

The value of the marine leisure sector was demonstrated forcefully this year at several high profile events including a national Boat Show in February, The Volvo Ocean Race Stop over in Galway in May, Dun Laoghaire Regatta in July and the Tall Ships in Belfast in August.

As part of this project, NUIG, Teagasc and the Marine Institute have undertaken to put a figure on the marine sector and its various sub-sectors at the national level.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
