Kinsale to host Dragon Gold Cup
Kinsale YC is to host the Dragon Gold Cup in 2012. Raced for annually in Europe, the Gold Cup consists of a six race, no discard series. It is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious one design keelboat events in the world. Kinsale's Barry Lynch is to head up the regatta according to the club website.

“To host this famous regatta is an honor that is highly sought after by many Dragon-sailing nations. We are no strangers to running international sailing events in Kinsale, but the Gold Cup is something special” said newly appointed Regatta Director, Barry Lynch.

“It will be a tremendous spectacle to see 90 or so Dragons in Kinsale. Along with crew and families, we expect an influx of around 450 people so it will be a great commercial opportunity for the town,” he added.

Kinsale previously hosted the Dragon Gold Cup in 1977 and more recently the Dragon European Championships in 2003.

The Dragon Gold Cup is one of the most famous trophies in the history of yachting and was presented in 1937 by Members of the Clyde Yacht Clubs’ Conference, with the intention of bringing together as many competitors of different nationalities as possible for yacht racing in a friendly spirit, and raced for by yachts of the International Dragon Class belonging to any country.
