A former member of the Garda Water Unit who died on a diving excursion at the weekend has been remembered by colleagues as “a really popular guy who had won several awards for water rescues”.

The Irish Times reports that David Hearne succumbed to the bends during a dive to a wreck site 15km off Fethard-on-Sea in Co Wexford on Saturday 25 May.

The off-duty garda in his mid 40s was attached to the Waterford Divisional Traffic Corps, but was an experienced diver and previously served with the Garda Water Unit, and had many river and sea rescues to his credit.

The Irish Times has much more on the story HERE.
