30th January 2020
Public Consultation on Marine Strategy Framework

Directive (2008/56/EC) Article 17 update of the Assessment (Article 8), Determination of Good Environmental Status (Article 9) and Environmental Targets (Article 10)

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive is implemented in 6-year cycles commencing in 2012. The Initial Assessment addressing Articles 8, 9 and 10 of the directive was published and reported to the European Commission in 2013.

This was followed by the development of a monitoring programme in 2015 and a programme of measures in 2016.

The Department is now in the second implementation cycle and is in the process of revising the Initial Assessment under Articles 8, 9 and 10 of the Directive. Your views are sought in relation to the draft update.

The draft document can be viewed at: https:// www.housing.gov.ie/water/water-quality/marine-strategy/publicconsultation-marine-strategy-framework-directive-200856ec

The Public Consultation document can be downloaded from the link in the documents section of this web page.

Your views are being sought on the following elements set out in this document namely: the assessment of the marine environment, the characteristics for good environmental status, the proposed environmental targets and associated threshold values.

This feedback will be used to inform the preparation of the final assessment report including setting environmental targets and associated threshold values. There will be further consultations after this one where your views will be sought on the revisions to the monitoring programme and programme of measures.

A questionnaire document outlining the aspects where input is sought is available to download, complete and return.

The Department invites submissions from interested parties by e-mail or in writing.

The consultation period closes at midday on Friday, 28 February 2020.
