Following the launch earlier this year of its biggest ever yacht, Dutch builder Royal Huisman has unveiled what’s being touted as the world’s largest sloop.

Designed by Malcolm McKeon — who is also responsible for the BlackCat catamaran among others — the Apex 850 features a towering 107-metre air-draft rig that’s taller than the Statue of Liberty and “will dominate the marine landscape wherever in the world she drops anchor”.

But size isn’t the only thing that matters, as the “radical” design also comprises an all-glass superstructure and a minimalist aesthetic that its creators claim won’t sacrifice comfort or performance for style.

“The sailing experience of Apex 850 will be sensational, with speeds in excess of wind speed in most conditions,” McKeon says.

“Her retractable keel, optimised weight distribution and limited heel angle will provide stability, comfort and safety for all on board. Her twin high aspect rudders will provide a rapid response to her fly-by-wire helm.”

Royal Huisman chief executive Jan Timmerman adds: “Two of the world’s 10 largest sailing yachts, Athena and Sea Eagle II, are Royal Huisman builds and Apex 850 would make a fitting third, easily becoming the largest member of this elite circle.”
