#RNLI - Volunteers from Lough Ree RNLI assisted a family of four last week after the cruiser they were in ran aground.
The crew was requested to launch their inshore lifeboat at 11.30am on Thursday 16 July following a report that a 36ft cruiser, with two adults and two children on board, had run aground near navigation marker 8 south of Lanesborough.
Weather conditions at the time were described as good with a south easterly Force 3-4 breeze and moderate waters.
The lifeboat launched within minutes and made its way to the scene where the crew boarded the cruiser, confirmed that the family aboard were unhurt, and checked the boat’s hull for damage.
Satisfied that no one was in any immediate danger, the lifeboat crew set up a towline and moved the vessel into safe waters.
"The cruiser was hard aground, owing to the wind direction, which made it harder than usual to get her off the rocks," said Lough Ree lifeboat helm Robert West.
"We checked thoroughly for damage before and after moving the boat; fortunately, no damage was found and the family were able to continue their holiday straight away."
Since 16 July, Lough Ree lifeboat crew have been called out five more times – one vessel suffered engine failure, three ran aground, and one call was a false alarm.
