#Rowing: The Irish eight which won at the World Masters Regatta at Lake Bagsvaerd, Denmark, have been chosen as the Afloat Rowers of the Month for September. There were a number of good results by Irish crews at the event, which is one of the biggest international events of the year. Among the competitors this year was Denmark legend Eskild Ebbesen. The Irish E eight (55 years or older), was drawn from five clubs (Commercial, Belfast Boat Club, Neptune, Old Collegians and Waterford Boat Club) and outpaced German and British rivals in a field of seven crews. They had also won last year at this level. The crew was: John Hudson, Denis Crowley, Gerry Murphy, Mick Heavey, Colin Dickson, Colin Hunter, Fran O’Toole, Donal Mc Guinness and cox Al Penkert.

Rower of the Month awards: The judging panel is made up of Liam Gorman, rowing correspondent of The Irish Times, and David O'Brien, editor of Afloat magazine. Monthly awards for achievements during the year will appear on afloat.ie and the overall national award will be presented to the person or crew who, in the judges' opinion, achieved the most notable results in, or made the most significant contribution to rowing during 2016. Keep a monthly eye on progress and watch our 2016 champions list grow.

#Rowing: Commercial Regatta was the biggest ever run by the club, with a huge entry from juniors in particular. Some of the top results also went the way of the host club. Trinity had to give way in the men’s intermediate eight, though in the women’s club eight they reversed the order. Scott Addison of Trinity won the men’s club single.

Neptune Head Set to Go Ahead

#Rowing: The organisers of the Neptune Head of the River this Saturday, December 30th, have decided to go ahead with the event. The weather forecast is for winds of 12 to 20 kilometres per hour at Blessington, which would leave the course rowable. The course has to be laid, and there is a chance that the event could yet be cancelled, but only if the weather forecast changes significantly.

# Rowing: Trinity took the women’s eights title at the Neptune Regatta at sunny Islandbridge today, beating a game Portora crew which had earlier had an easy win in the women’s junior 18 final. Trinity A beat Trinity B in the men’s senior eights final. The men’s masters eights final was a terrific race, won by Neptune by a canvas. In another fine battle, Fionnán Groome of Commercial won the intermediate singles final by beating Sam McKeown of Portadown by a quarter of a canvas.

#NeptuneHead: The fastest crew home at the Neptune Head of the River at Blessington Lakes today was the UCD men’s senior eight, but a four made up of two pairs in the Ireland training system were  third, nine seconds behind the UCD eight. Cormac Folan and Dave Neale, who train in Dublin, and Aidan McEvoy and Finbar Manning, who are based in Limerick, were watched by Don McLachlan, the Ireland lead coach. The double of Gary and Paul O’Donovan caught a crab directly in front of McLachlan, but were the fastest double of the day. However, Niall Kenny won the senior single sculls impressively, posting significantly faster times in both the first and second heads than Paul O’Donovan could manage in his effort in the first head.
