Howth sailor Tara Flood leads the Mitsubishi Motors Optimist National Championships after a blustery day one, with three races sailed in an 18-knot southerly. The 243-boat fleet was split, with the main fleet racing in Dublin Bay and the regatta fleet sailing inside the harbour. Flood has a seven-point cushion after three races, with heavier airs forecast today.
As the sailors prepare to head out, Dun Laoghaire harbour is showing 14 knots, with gusts of up to 23 knots on the anemometer.
The silver fleet is being led comprehensively by Lizzie McDowell of Malahide at the moment, with Dun Laoghaire sailor Sean Donnelly heading up the junior fleet. Hilary Herlihy of Lough Derg tops the 67-boat regatta fleet.
