Cork Students Set to Defend World Title

Cork Students Set to Defend World Title

The champions of the World Student Yachting Cup title, Cork Institute of Technology, will defend their title in Marseille, France next month. There will be twelve different countries represented with 140 students.

For the past few years the boat used for regattas has been the Grand Surprise. With its power and effectiveness this boat has become a favourite of the French west coast and its regattas. It’s constructed for fast sailing and is very manoeuverable. Our photo below shows the team practising in Cork Harbour in a smilar boat, the Beneteau 36.7.

The team is very fortunate to have secured such a prestigious sponsor as 3 Mobile. They continue to pursue a very vigorous training campaign in Cork Harbour where they have been provided with the use of the well known  First 36.7 Endeavour.  The boat has been generously provided for the team campaign by Denise and Conor Phelan.

The team members are: George Kenefick, Donagh Good, Nathan Kirwan,  Sylvia Phelan, Judy Costigan, Kevin Goodeling, Gramham Durcan, Cian Twomey and Joe Bruen. The event is from October 24th to October 31st.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
