Round Ireland Record Underway

15th October 2009

A Round Ireland powerboat record set only a month ago is under threat today from two Kerrymen who aim to reclaim the title in the same boat in which they set the inaugural time two years ago.

Justin McInerney and a two man crew established a new time of 19 hours, nine minutes and 50 seconds in September in a high profile endurance RIB ‘Milwaukee Seawolf’ breaking the record by just four minutes.

But Philip Fitzgibbon and Mike Shanahan who set off from the Old Head of Kinsale this morning at 1am in a 7.5 metre RIB aim to better that later today. Their boat has a satellite tracker on board so the time can be authenticated. Afloat.ie have access to the tracker and will be making regular updates during the course of the attempt today. At lunch time the crew were north of Belfast and anticipating a fuel stop.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
