With a record entry of 123 crews, yesterday's St. Michael's Rowing Club regatta added a real splash of colour to the back of the West Pier in Dun Laoghaire. This year's annual event for the local club was scheduled to run alongside the Dun Laoghaire Regatta, with the centerpiece of this partnership being the Kingstown 200 Bicentenary Rowing Race. This topped off the rowing regatta race card, as well as the Volvo Regatta's classics boat series. The 2.6km race saw 16 East Coast skiffs plot a course from the beach at Salthill, through the harbour mouth, finishing at the bandstand on the East Pier. Quite the spectacle was on show for sailors and pier walkers alike, in perfect conditions for coastal rowing.

Entries were limited to mixed crews of 2 men and 2 women, with the cash prize of '200 Guineas' taken by Wicklow Rowing Club crew of Paula Keating, Leona Franey, Michael Sillery, Michael Dunne, and Marc Nichols.

The standard race card for the day involved 17 races from veterans, right through to Under 12s, which at 11 crews was the biggest race of the day. While medals were shared between 8 of the 10 clubs entered, the clear winner on the day must surely have been St. Patrick's of Ringsend, with a hugely impressive 8 wins. Next week, the East Coast Regatta circuit is hosted by Stella Maris Rowing Club of Ringsend, marking the halfway point 2017 East Coast rowing season.
