During COP26 the Clyde Maritime Trust was visited by UN Special Envoy for the Oceans, Peter Thomson and the Relay4Nature baton as part of the Ocean Race initiative to give a voice on critical issues affecting the planet's oceans, writes Jehan Ashmore.

The Trust which owns the historic tallship Glenlee (built in 1896), a former merchant sailing vessel which is 125 years this year, is the last remaining 3 masted Clydebuilt ship still afloat in the UK.

Afloat adds Cobh, Cork Harbour was a port of call of the tallship which had circumnavigated the globe at least four times, symbolic of the sailing vessels that enabled global trade across the oceans.

The changing climate and humanity have affected those same oceans radically over the past 100 years.

So it seemed appropriate that the Tall Ship would play a small part in highlighting the plight as eyes turn to Glasgow this month to help find a solution.

COP26: Tall Ship Glenlee Currently Closed

Due to the COP26 Conference held on the banks of the Clyde, related restrictions are in place, with the current closure of Glenlee which is berthed alongside the Riverside Museum. The venue is located downriver to where the COP Conference continues to take place also along the quays. 

According to the The Clyde Maritime Trust, the closure is due to COP26 and not exclusively Covid19 reasons, however they expect the Glenlee to be reopened on Friday, 19 November (or possibly earlier).

Glenlee Annual Lecture

Every year, The Clyde Martime Trust marks the anniversary of the tallship's launch with their annual lecture.

This year the Trust is delighted to welcome Hannah Cunliffe, Director of National Historic Ships. In addition the Trust is proud to be the 2021 flagship of the UK government funded, independent organisation.

The National Historic Ships provides objective advice to UK governments and local authorities, funding bodies, and the historic ships sector on all matters relating to historic vessels in the UK. 

Hannah will share her vision of the future for historic vessels.

The free lecture will be held on board and broadcast digitally.  This is to take place next month, on Monday 6th December 2021 - 6.45 for a 7pm start.
