Race 3 Win For Annalise Murphy As Weather Continues To Bedevil Laser Radial Worlds
The National Yacht Club’s Rio silver medallist Annalise Murphy leapt to the front of the Irish women campaigning for Olympic selection with a win in race 3 of the weather-bedevilled ILCA Laser Radial Women’s World Championship in Melbourne, Australia.
A wind that backed from north to south-south east and varied in strength from 6 to 23 knots delayed the start until 1800, allowing for only one of three scheduled races and throwing the programme into disarray. (Click HERE for the full local report.)
When the fleet did get away, the strong breeze with big waves played to Annalise's strengths. Her gun today puts her in 21st overall, well clear for now of rivals Aoife Hopkins of Howth Yacht Club (6th today, 37th overall), Eve McMahon (HYC) (32, 64) and Aisling Keller of Lough Derg YC (38, 62).
For the third successive day the race committee have announced that the next day’s racing will be of three races back-to-back in an effort to get the schedule back on track. Wednesday’s forecast predicts somewhat more settled conditions, with stronger breezes.
With the split into gold and silver fleets approaching, the discard after race 4 takes on increased significance for the Irish contenders.
Those in the silver fleet will effectively be confined to a best score in the mid-50s, while gold fleet participants can still target top 10 finishes. McMahon and Keller will hope for good results in the next race, while for Murphy and Hopkins there is an opportunity to put some distance on the chasing pack.
