Rowan third at Fireball Euros

19th August 2009
Rowan third at Fireball Euros
Dun Laoghaire sailor Francis Rowan, sailing with English helm and Ulster champion Tom Gillard, is currently lying third at the Fireball Europeans in La Rochelle. The NYC sailor has counted just one race outside the top ten in the 89-boat fleet so far to position himself within striking distance of the top two. DMYC pairing Noel Butler and Seamus Moore are the top all-Irish crew in 11th place.

Four races have been sailed so far, with two more days to go. The regatta website is appallingly poor, with no photos, and a bare results page the only information on the event to date. It is viewable here. More as we have it.

What is worth mentioning is that Rowan's grip on the podium is likely to be short-lived, with no discards yet in play.

Way down the fleet, due to black flag penalties, lie plenty of front-runners, just waiting to discard a BFD after today's first race and shoot back up the rankings. Spare a thought, also, for Emsworth duo Chips Howarth and Vyv Townend, who have matched two bullets with two black flags, and will have to work hard to reach the top while carrying such a penalty.
