#flyingfifteen – Despite the holiday season a good fleet of Flying Fifteens turned out for the DBSC race on a cold Thursday evening. Tom Galvin with newcomer to the fleet Kerel crewing won the race in light conditions with a raging incoming tide. It was a clean start, most boats tried to head in towards the shore to get out of the tide, there was no real way to avoid it heading to Bullock Mark, there did appear to be more wind to the left of the course but the downside was that the tide was stronger. As the fleet got close to the mark Colman was leading with Ben & MJ Mulligan also doing well as they headed inshore. Meanwhile Galvin, Doyle and Doorly went left, Doorly went furtherest into the tide but it brought him down to the mark to lead. Galvin recovered well after hitting the mark and was closely followed by Ross Doyle & John Whelan. At this point the gods turned off the wind and the remainder of the fleet struggled in the tide to get around the mark. The first three headed off with Doorly leading but it was very close with Galvin and Doyle snapping on his heels all the way. On the run the wind shifted, the prevailing wind from the west could be seen up the course, Doorly spotted this and went right to pick it up, the run soon became a beat- typical Dublin Bay! At the last mark Doorly did a poor mark rounding and Galvin and Doyle got inside, Galvin led and took the gun but Doyle and Doorly had a ding dong to the line with Doorly getting second by inches. Colman was fourth with the remainder of the fleet well back. Gerry Ryan in Deranged was fifth with Mulvin sixth.
It was a difficult night for all but the mood was lifted when the fleet arrived ashore and had their monthly sailing supper where Fleet Captain Ronan Beirne provided entertainment and prizes for various feat and achievement of the last month. This Saturday the DBSC series continues.
