Bring Ferry Service Back Calls for Dun Laoghaire Harbour After Digital Hub Plan Collapses
#FerryNews - There have been calls to bring a ferry service back to Dun Laoghaire Harbour after plans to turn the area into a digital technology hub fell through.
As DublinLive reports, developer Philip Gannon scrapped the deal after it was discovered that the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company had failed to secure a foreshore licence to lease the building despite advertising it for lease two years ago.
Stena Line closured its ferry service at the harbour in 2014, bringing to an end to the historic route (to Holyhead) which first started in 1835.
Local Senator Victor Boyhan said the returning ferries to the harbour would be good for the town.
He said: “Brexit, will pose challenges for all ports, the reality is that there will be some sort of checks and controls on the movement of goods and people travelling to and from Ireland and the UK.
"The necessary facilities are in place at the Dun Laoghaire terminal complex, if required.”
Dun Laoghaire Harbour was recently transferred to Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.
Senator Boyan said the council should consider inviting expressions of interest from ferry operators to provide a seasonal ferry service to and from the Port.
