Afloat.ie caught up with Ric Morris of Race Geek after a weekend which marked a milestone for the Irish race electronics and analytics company. Their d10 tactical race instrument was used by half the teams in the top 10 in the J70 class, including all 3 boat on the podium at Bacardi Invitational Regatta in Miami, Florida.

"Sucess with the top teams is great. Kit doesn't stay on those boats unless it works. But its particularity satisfying to see boats in the mid-fleet move up the rankings with a d10 onboard. We had a Melges 24 customer start using our analytics and score his first ever podium at the St Petes NOOD."

Racegeek continues to launch innovative products. Their free Altus analytics service is now available to anyone with a d10. It provides users with an objective measure of their days racing to help focus in on what was fast.

"This winter we had a Ukranian SB20 team sailing in Portugal coached by a guy in the UK. The same coach also supports a team in Australia. He used to hook up with the teams at big events. Now he keeps tabs on every race using Altus. By making it really easy to upload data and share it Altus basically creates a brand new opportunity for the kind of service only available to top-level Grand Prix teams previously."

Social Platform for ICRAs at Dun Laoghaire

In conjunction with RS Sailing, Race Geek launched Cirrus at the RYA Dinghy Show last weekend. This social platform aims to do the same thing for sailing that Stava has done for cycling. It will be used at this years ICRA Nationals - which race geek are sponsoring - to create virtual challenges running alongside the regular racing.

"The partnership with RS is important and will give Cirrus the kind of initial take up a social platform needs to get going. With their experience working with class associations and running events the input they give is invaluable. We have d10 on the RS21 charter fleet that is touring the big US events this summer and they will be using Cirrus to build an online community for the fleet."

Use of Cirrus is not limited to those with a d10. Anyone will be able to document and share their sailing and take part in online challenges with just a smartphone. Cirrus will be free for anyone to use and available in April.

Irish start-up Racegeek has picked up the international Pittman Innovation Award in the 'Racing' category for their d10 sailing intrument.

American–-based Sail Magazine review the whole range of sailing products each year and select three in each catagory they believe are exceptional.

In making the award the judging panel highlighted the d10s combination of outstanding display, connectivity, unique features specifically designed for the sportsboat sailor and a range of other features more commonly found in more expensive systems.

Racegeek co-founder Ric Morris who races out of Howth Yacht Club and Dun Laoghaire told Afloat.ie: 'We're delighted Sail Magazine chose the d10 for a Pittman. There are a lot of quality products and well respected manufacturers on this year’s list. It was totally unexpected. Getting an award is a real boost.'

Fellow co-founder JC Durbin added: 'The judging panel for the Pittman know their stuff. Being picked for an award is a real honour. We'd like to thank them for choosing the d10.'
