Twenty-four hours ago, the forecast for Dublin Bay was showing strong winds for the morning and early part of the afternoon but that the wind would start dropping off as late afternoon and evening set in. Still, by 18:45, the suggestion was that there would still be 10 – 12 knots with some heavier gusts. And certainly, immediately outside Dun Laoghaire's harbour mouth, that synopsis looked correct. However, as we sailed downwind further into Scotsman's Bay, the sense was that the wind had got softer again. However, in contrast to the previous three Thursdays, the breeze was healthy. An ebbing tide meant that a slightly less conservative start could be contemplated, the wind was blowing from the SW, which meant that the first upwind leg was "contra-tide".

The DBSC Flying Fifteen Race Officer set the course for the night as MW4, an upwind leg to Pier (P), followed by a three-sailer to Poldy(S), inshore to Battery(S), back to Poldy(S) and what turned out to be a two-sail fetch to Molly(P), before a hitch into the committee boat finish. (See above course card).

The decision with respect to the leg to Pier was to stay inshore with possibly less tide and maybe a slightly better wind direction or go right where there appeared to be more breeze. Frank Miller & Susie Mulligan (3845) pioneered the hard right and by Pier that had been proven not to be the way to go. In a similar position were Ben Mulligan & Cormac Bradley (4081), who had started going left off the start line but found themselves being squeezed by Alistair Court & Conor O'Leary (3753) and tacked off. It seems Court & O'Leary were, in turn, being squeezed by Neil Colin & Margaret Casey (4028). The nett result was that at Pier anyone who had shown any form of bias towards the inshore route was "in the clover".

For what should appear to be an obvious reason, I am not able to recall exactly what the rounding order at Pier was, so let me just say that the following boats were in the leading pack – identified as much by spinnaker colours as anything! Alan Green and daughter (4026), Ken Dumpleton (3955), Alan Balfe (3995), David Mulvin & Ronan Beirne (4068), Colin & Casey, Court & O'Leary, Louise McKenna & Hermine O'Keeffe (3697)……….you get the idea! The spinnaker leg to Poldy was quite tame because although there was a bit of a swell, the wind was already showing signs of dropping off.

From Poldy to Battery, the majority of the fleet went right before heading inshore at the latter stages of the leg. Going inshore initially proved to be very frustrating and became a bit of a tease, the wind seeming to suggest that as a straggler, it might let you back in only to serve you with another header just as you thought you had thrown a double six with the dice. At Battery, Green, Dumpleton and Colin were well placed. Mulvin and Balfe were a bit further back. Most boats sailed the rhumb line to Poldy while at least one sailed a more westerly line and put in a gybe to get down to Poldy for the second time – that didn't work either. The leg to Molly was a two-sailer and consequently there appeared to be little change in the pecking order that this correspondent could see other than us losing 13th place on the water to Joe Coughlan (3913).

There was to be no redemption on the hitch to the finish either!

In terms of the Thursday Series, Neil Colin & Margaret Casey (20) have opened a two-point gap on Ken Dumpleton & Joe Hickey. Shane McCarthy & Chris Doorly are in third on 31pts with Ben Mulligan & Cormac Bradley 4th on 35 points, one ahead of David Mulvin & Ronan Beirne.

Patrick Burke's First 40 Prima Forte had a win IRC and ECHO in Cruiser Zero in Dublin Bay Sailing Club's (DBSC) Thursday night race. 

117 boats in all DBSC classes enjoyed a good breeze on the bay for the race that counts towards overall points in the club's AIB Summer Series.

George Sisk's XP 44 WOW was second. Third was El Pocko, the German Frers Puma 42 that was dismasted last season.

In Cruiser 1 IRC, Tim and Richard Goodbody's J109 White Mischief was the winner, Paul Barirington's Jalapeno was second. Third was Tony Fox's IMX 38, Gringo

RS Aero sailor Noel Butler of the National Yacht Club was the winner of tonight's light air DBSC PY Class race on Dublin Bay.

Royal St. George's Brendan Foley finished second with Butler's clubmate Stephen Oram was third.

All 22 classes of Dublin Bay Sailing Club's (DBSC) Saturday racing schedule were cancelled this afternoon due to strong westerly winds. 

The termination follows an abandonment of DBSC racing last Thursday for all except five classes due to light winds on that occasion.

Dublin Bay Sailing Club Thursday night racing was curtailed tonight even though the prospect of racing looked promising all day on Dublin Bay. 

Despite the fact there were 20 knots of breeze from the south at 4.30 pm, only five of DBSC's 22 classes finished racing due to light winds at 6 pm race time. 

The race officers flew flags 'N over A' indicating racing was abandoned for the evening as rain and light winds prevailed.

Five classes finished in DBSC's Red Fleet.

Rodney and Keith Martin's Beneteau 44.7 Lively Lady from the Royal Irish Yach Club was the winner of Saturday's light wind DBSC race on Dublin Bay for Cruisers Zero on both IRC and ECHO handicaps.

The top three was a completely Royal Irish affair with the First 4.7 Prima Forte second and George Sisk's XP44, Wow in third place on IRC.

Barry Glavin and Niall O’Riordan's Sea Biscuit from the Royal St George Yacht Club was the winner of the first race of Saturday's Dublin Bay Sailing Club SB20 fixture.

113 boats across all the DBSC classes enjoyed a moderate ENE wind in sunny weather on the bay.

Second to Sea Biscuit was Jerry Dowling and Enda O’Coineen's Bad/Kilcullen from the Royal Irish Yacht Club. Third was Charlotte O’Kelly's Sneaky B from the National Yacht Club.

The class sailed two races and a results summary is below.

In the Cruiser classes, Patrick Burke's Prima Forte from the Royal Irish was the Cruiser 0 IRC race winner with Vincent Farrell's Tsunami from the National Yacht Club in second and Rodney and Keith Martin's RIYC based Lively Lady in third.

Last year, for one of the first times in a proud history stretching back to 1884, there was no gala event for Dublin Bay Sailing Club's annual prizegiving but as most Dun Laoghaire Harbour observers will attest, most of the sailors in the country's biggest sailing club felt fortunate there was any racing at all, given the ravages of COVID-19.

This summer, new DBSC Commodore Ann Kirwan made up for the absence of the winter Royal St George hosted affair, with individual outdoor prizegivings in each club to congratulate over 100 different winners from 22 DBSC classes in the AIB sponsored season.

As Afloat previously reported with a full list of winners here, it's an impressive roll call of division winners that includes DBSC's six premier awards for best performances.

DBSC Premier awards 2020

Patrick Burke's Prima Forte, the 2020 delivered Beneteau First 40 won the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Trophy for the best new DBSC yacht in the 2020 season.

As regular Afloat readers will know, the Royal Irish yacht in its former life was known as La Response and Courier Zen, a top UK and French Commodore's Cup campaigner.

Lindsay Casey's Royal St. George Yacht Club J97 Windjammer performed on both inshore and offshore circuits last season and was the winner of the best yacht on handicap.

The best yacht in the one-design divisions was James Conboy-Fischer's Billy Whizz, the first time a B211 has lifted the George Arthur Newsom Cup as Afloat reported here.

Laser Radial ace Rian Geraghty McDonnell of the NYC won the Dr Alf Delany Cup for the best dinghy performance of the season.

David Meeke and Martin McCarthy won the Brendan Ebril Memorial Cup for the Best yacht for most frequent participation in the Ruffian 23 Alias. 

Kevin Byrne skipper of the Cruiser 3, Starlet is presented with a number of perpetual trophies. RS Aero sailor Brendan Foley of the Royal St. George Yacht Club was the winner of both light air Portsmouth Yardstick DBSC dinghy races at Dun Laoghaire Harbour.

In both races, Foley beat the National Yacht Club's Noel Butler, who, in turn, beat Greystones sailor Roy Van Maanen all sailing RS Aero dinghies.

Shane McCarthy & Chris Doorly (4085) dominated the latter 60% of the DBSC Flying FifteensThursday race last night in what were the best summer conditions we have had thus far. For each of the last three days, grey skies in the morning have given way to glorious sunshine by late morning and yesterday was no exception. By race start time, we had a good sea breeze, nothing too strenuous, and an ebbing tide across the course.

The Race Team led by Suzanne McGarry gave the 14-boat fleet GW4 as their course for the night – Bulloch, Island, Pier, Island, Pier, Finish.

The philosophy of the fleet to the first beat to Bulloch seemed to be divided, for the first time, with a split between offshore and inshore. Both groups would have the benefit of the ebbing tide, but the differential would be which would get the better wind. By Bulloch, the question wasn't answered because Tom Murphy & Karel (4057) stormed in from the left-hand side of the beat (offshore) to take the lead, followed by McCarthy & Doorly, who had been in the group pioneering the inshore route to the first mark. Also well placed at this stage were Ken Dumpleton & Joe (3955), Neil Colin & Bernard (4028), Alistair Court & Conor O'Leary (3753), Adrian Cooper (3198), Niall & Mrs Colman (4008) and David Mulvin & Ronan Beirne (4068). In fact, from this correspondent's perspective, just about everybody was well-placed.

The leg to Island was a two-sailer but not everyone managed to compensate for the tide, and the race leader may have been one of them because his lead was eaten into by McCarthy, who sailed a much lower line to the mark.

The leg from Island to Pier split views on how to fight the tide as the fleet went westwards towards Pier and for the second time of the evening the view was split! By the time we were halfway down the leg, the spread across the course was of the order of 6 -700 meters from Niall Meagher & Nicki Matthews (3938) inshore to Neil Colin & Bernard (4028) offshore. Offshore and middle to right seemed to work best.

On this leg, McCarthy & Doorly took the lead. This correspondent and Ben Mulligan (4081) staged a minor recovery on the spinnaker leg and soon found themselves in the relatively close company of the Colmans (4008), Mulvin & Beirne (4068), Peter Murphy & Ciara (3774) and Frank Miller & Ed Butler (3845) – this was starting to look better. While McCarthy managed to pull out some distance from the chasing pack, the balance of the fleet seemed to close in – we were getting closer to Murphy (T) and Dumpleton.

There was further convergence at Pier and some very loose definitions of where three boat-lengths from the mark was, the perennial argument, and this correspondent saw the good downwind work evaporate when a gap that would allow a carriage and four to be driven through appear that everyone in close proximity availed of. We didn't create the gap ourselves but paid for it is very expensive terms. Back to the drawing board!!

McCarthy & Doorly were now in the favourable position of being able to sail their own race, which they did – stretching to the "country mile" quoted above. Or should that be "nautical mile"? No! that would be an actual measurement!! The wind conditions seemed to favour a middle and left approach to the beat back up to Island, and this is where the majority of the fleet found itself.

At Island McCarthy, Murphy T and Dumpleton were in the podium positions, but the latter two needed to be careful of Mulvin, and Colman particularly but also Miller, Court and Mulligan who, with a good downwind leg might be able to close distance. O the second run to Pier, Court & Mulligan worked the inshore route but the width across the fleet this time round was much smaller. Court and Mulligan agreed gentleman-like to allow each other to pursue their own course when it appeared there was a divergence of thought and this left Mulligan as the most inshore boat. Mulvin, Colman and Miller were just beyond "touching distance" but not quite close enough to be overly worried about by either Court or Mulligan.

In the hitch to the finish, Colman and Miller went offshore again whereas Mulligan, having got through Court on the spinnaker leg, worked the inshore route. While he closed on them, it wasn't enough to enhance his finishing position.

The finishing order therefore was; McCarthy & Doorly (4085), Murphy (T) & Karel (4057), Dumpleton & Joe (3955), Mulvin & Beirne (4068), Mr & Mrs Colman (4008), Miller & Butler (3845).
In the overall series McCarthy (17) jumps into first with a four-point cushion on Dumpleton and Mulligan (21), with Colin (23) and Mulvin (32) closing out the top five, with a single discard applying.

Dublin Bay Sailing Club (DBSC) is one of Europe's biggest yacht racing clubs. It has almost sixteen hundred elected members. It presents more than 100 perpetual trophies each season some dating back to 1884. It provides weekly racing for upwards of 360 yachts, ranging from ocean-going forty footers to small dinghies for juniors.

Undaunted by austerity and encircling gloom, Dublin Bay Sailing Club (DBSC), supported by an institutional memory of one hundred and twenty-nine years of racing and having survived two world wars, a civil war and not to mention the nineteen-thirties depression, it continues to present its racing programme year after year as a cherished Dublin sporting institution.

The DBSC formula that, over the years, has worked very well for Dun Laoghaire sailors. As ever DBSC start racing at the end of April and finish at the end of September. The current commodore is Jonathan Nicholson of the Royal St. George Yacht Club.

The character of racing remains broadly the same in recent times, with starts and finishes at Club's two committee boats, one of them DBSC's new flagship, the Freebird. The latter will also service dinghy racing on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Having more in the way of creature comfort than the John T. Biggs, it has enabled the dinghy sub-committee to attract a regular team to manage its races, very much as happened in the case of MacLir and more recently with the Spirit of the Irish. The expectation is that this will raise the quality of dinghy race management, which, operating as it did on a class quota system, had tended to suffer from a lack of continuity.
