Royal St. George Yacht Club’s Adrian Lee aboard his Swan 60 ‘Lee Overlay Partners II’ racing in the 53rd edition of Antigua Sailing Week has been a regular on the prizegiving podium as the internationally renowned regatta takes a break on Wednesday after three days of close fought racing in CSA Racing Class 3.
Currently sitting third in class there is little to separate the top three boats both afloat and on the leaderboard with close-fought racing being had in this competitive class.
Antigua Race Week is one of the ‘bucket list’ regattas for most sailors and this year’s regatta is extra special after a two-year hiatus due to Covid- 19.
This edition of the internationally renowned regatta has eighty-seven teams from over twenty different countries across 14 classes, boats of all sizes and shapes and even two Cork 1720s sailing as part of the new CSA Sportsboat class.
Conditions have returned to more typical Antigua Sailing Week weather after the Round The Island Race on Saturday greeted competitors with plenty of rain, little wind, and a distinct absence of sun. With the lack of wind and no provision to shorten the course most of the fleet were timed out after sailing for most of the day only to not make it to the finish line in time. Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday brought the sun and winds between 12- 18 knots and some renowned Caribbean champagne sailing with swells of 1.5m rolling in and giving the teams a decent work out and the chance to dust off and enjoy the sailing conditions.
At halfway stage in the regatta Lee Overlay Partners II is sitting in 3rd place behind the very well raced OMII a Swan 58 and Pata Negra the ever-present IRC 46. Three days on the podium for Lee Overlay Partners II with two more days of racing Adrian and his team are hoping to get back on top of the podium very soon.
