Yesterday the team had been grateful to receive some local knowledge from Tony O' Gorman, including tidal information and wind patterns. This knowledge alongside their comprehensive preparations gave Team Ireland plenty of confidence going into the practice race.
Despite a somewhat poor start, where the team found themselves in a midfleet scrap coming of the line, a combination of sound tactics and impressive boat speed found the Irish boat work there way through the fleet and into second position by the first mark, just behind Team USA. Downwind they continued to push the Americans hard and soon found themselves in a controlling first place. By the leeward mark the Irish had established a comfortable lead and were forgiven for relaxing as they lead the fleet through the second lap of the race to finish first.
Today's imposing performance has granted the Irish team a strong belief and confidence going into their first day of proper racing tomorrow. A similar forecast of medium to strong winds over choppy water is expected, a welcome sight for this Irish crew. Before then however, all of the nations present will have a chance to mingle and enjoy a sample of each other's cultures when every team serves out a national dish of their own making.
