#Canoeing: Sean Rice was the fastest man in the inaugural Irish Coast Paddling Championships from Greystones to Dún Laoghaire. Another South African, Hayley Jo Nixon took the women’s title. Brother and sister Bernard Cahill and Roisin Cahill from Clare were the best of the Irish – both placed ninth.

Rice, who had practiced on the route regularly, said that everything had gone really well in Saturday’s race. One of the greats of canoeing, multiple world champion Hank McGregor, tested Rice at the start and eventually took fourth.
