The Royal St George Yacht Club had reason to celebrate when members of the U25 squad took Class 1 and won the overall team prize in the Irish Sailing Pathfinder Women at the Helm Regatta this past weekend.

With Niamh Henry at the helm, Alanna Lyttle on main trim, Ellen Murray on pit, Roberta Bell King on bow and Gillian Ballesty on kite trim, the Class 1 team won both of their Saturday races on Dublin Bay in the event hosted by the neighbouring National Yacht Club.

“It was tough going but we worked well as a team and had some fun with the spinnaker in the big wind,” the crew said later.

The RSGYC also won the overall team prize with Helen O’Beirne in the Laser Radial and Grace O’Beirne in the 420.

Sligo Yacht Club’s sailors were the big winners on the day, as previously reported on Afloat.ie.

The first Irish Sailing Pathfinder Women at the Helm finished in Dun Laoghaire today with 61 boats and well over 200 people taking part at the National Yacht Club.

The “All Female Crew” prize was won by The Lady Caroline, a J24 boat from Sligo Yacht Club. The team was helmed by Rachael O’Dwyer who said “we entered because we’ve all been sailing with mixed teams and we never get a chance to helm. We wanted to show everyone, and ourselves, what we can do”.

All the racing was completed on Saturday which saw choppy waters and gusts up to 35 knots in Dublin Bay, making the courses challenging and blustery for the boats. Racing on Day 2 was cancelled due to the weather conditions.

Amongst the prizewinners was Louise McKenna who won the “Silver Sailor” prize for helms over 60. The Roy Family Club Perpetual Trophy for the most successful club was won by the Royal St George Yacht Club (Dun Laoghaire).

Women have been sailing with and against each other for decades, but this is the first regatta to be held at a national level. This was a truly unique event where women were actively encouraged to develop their leadership skills by only allowing women helms. (Men also sailed but women had to make up 50% of the crew, and all boats were required to be helmed by women).

Irish Sailing event organiser Gail MacAllister said “while there is already equality in sailing with boys and girls competing against each other from an early age, the regatta was designed to reverse the trend of women leaving sailing when careers and family take over – and to show to younger or less experienced sailors that women helming and being a leader can become the norm”.

Entries are still open for the Irish Sailing Pathfinder Women at the Helm Regatta, hosted by the National Yacht Club on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August.

The event is open to PY dinghy and keelboat racing from Teens to Seniors. Full eligibility details are included in the Notice of Race.

The Perpetual Club Team Prize is open to all members of Irish Sailing affiliated clubs and there will be a wide range of category prizes.

Also planned for the weekend is a cruise in company with the Cruising Association of Ireland, as well as a Saturday night party in the NYC clubhouse.

This marks the first regatta held on a national level to celebrate women’s participation in Irish sailing, and interest may get a boost from news of Aisling Keller’s Olympic qualification for Tokyo 2020 in the Laser Radial.

Meanwhile, former Laser Radial competitor and Olympic silver medallist Annalise Murphy has spoken to The Irish Times about the challenges of her bid for Tokyo 2020 in the two-handed 49erFX with Katie Tingle.

Irish Sailing has been getting feedback from clubs and training centres of significant increases in insurance costs that are having a negative impact on the running of activities writes Gail McAllister of Irish Sailing. There is an element of déjà vu as this was a prevalent problem in the early 1990s. The issue at that time became so bad that some clubs and centres were unable even to get insurance quotes for their activities.

Group Schemes

One possible solution suggested is to establish a new group scheme specifically for Irish Sailing organisations. This was investigated in the early 90s, with a number of organisations signing up to a joint scheme. The issue, however, arises when an organisation makes a large claim – for example if a storm were to wipe out the pontoons of a club, or a large club were to be destroyed by fire resulting in a large claim. This would result in an inevitable hike in the premium for the group scheme, which whilst might be relatively manageable for larger organisations, would be unsustainable for the smaller organisations in the scheme.

The current group scheme for Irish Sailing affiliated clubs is set up via the Federation of Irish Sport with JLT Insurance, here https://www.irishsport.ie/insurance/. You can get a quote from them by referencing that you are an Irish Sailing affiliated organisation, and let Irish Sailing know the outcomes directly to [email protected].

Discount Schemes

Irish Sailing in the past has also looked into a discount scheme for Irish Sailing Clubs. Again the experience was not positive, as the discounts were applied as ‘introductory offers’, and over time - once the business was secured, clubs found their premiums rising again to market rates. As a result, at present there is no specific discount scheme for Irish Sailing affiliated organisations.

Irish Sailing and the Alliance for Insurance Reform

The issue of insurance is not solely a problem for sailing. As has been well publicised in the media, it is a problem in all sectors of Irish society today. Irish Sailing has joined forces with all sporting organisations in Ireland, and through the Federation of Irish Sport are now members of the ‘Alliance for Insurance Reform’.

The Alliance for Insurance Reform is a representative group formed with the sole objective of reducing spiralling insurance costs in Ireland to sustainable levels. The group consists of a wide range of civic, sporting and small business bodies as well as individual businesses; all of them affected by the unsustainable cost of insurance in Ireland. The Alliance has had several meetings with government officials and continues to lobby on our behalf to alert the government to the spiralling costs of insurance in this country. You can follow their progress here: https://insurancereform.ie

Irish Sailing want to hear from you

Irish Sailing would be interested to hear the recent experiences of their Clubs and Centres. Has your premium risen significantly in recent years? If so by how much? Is it as a result of recent claims, expansion of activities/premises or simply market forces? What are your experiences of group or discount schemes? Please email your thoughts and comments to [email protected]

Whitbread Race competitor Angela Heath will join regular Dublin Bay helms Jean Mitton and Alison Clarke among the inspiring and influential Irish women taking part in the first Pathfinder Women at the Helm event next month.

This new event “encourages women to embrace a role of leadership on the water, and set an example for future female sailors so that helming becomes the norm”. Registration is open HERE.

Despite boys and girls competing against each other in single-handed dinghies, it’s still uncommon to see women leading their own crew, says Irish Sailing. Yet there are many strong women quietly pursuing their passion for sailing.

Among them is Jean Mitton of the Royal St George, who when she started out was often the only woman on a crew outside of family outings.

“Facing challenges while on the boat has given me the full sailing experience and made me confident in my ability to be at the helm,” says the now 12-year veteran.

It’s a feeling shared by Alison Clarke, who will be helming the boat she regularly crews — Paul Colton’s Cri Cri — in the event over the weekend of Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August at the National Yacht Club.

“Sailing has taught me things about leadership that you can’t learn in a classroom or from a textbook,” she says.

Both Jean and Alison surely took inspiration from the likes of Angela Heath, who was part of the pioneering all-woman crew of Tracy Edwards’ Maiden. And now they will have the opportunity to test their skills against Angela as she helms the Beneteau 31.7 Crazy Horse.

Angela will also be taking part in a Q&A following a screening on Friday 16 August (National Yacht Club, 6.30pm) of the documentary Maiden, which charts the highs and lows of Edwards and crew in the 1989 edition of the world’s most challenging round-the-world sailing race.

The Irish Youth Sailing Club is one of the recipients of grant funding awarded by Ireland’s seven Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) to 274 coastal based projects at the weekend.

Another FLAG grant awardee from the world of Irish Sailing and boating is the national governing body who were awarded €50,143 for a 'Team Racing Development Programme'.

The Irish Coastal Rowing Federation was awarded €9,600 towards the staging of the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships 2019.

Scroll down for full grant list below.

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed, T.D., announced details of EMFF grants of €4 million supporting total investment of €6.4 million. The grants are co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union under Ireland’s European Maritime & Fisheries Fund Operational Programme for the seafood sector.

Announcing the grant awards, Minister Creed said: “Ireland’s 7 FLAGs are providing a wonderful source of investment for local seafood and marine projects in our coastal communities. Over 800 projects in seven coastal regions have benefitted from EMFF funding since the present FLAG scheme was launched in 2017. The Scheme continues to positively impact on coastal communities in Ireland. The high number of successful projects funded this year reflects both the quality of the projects and the hard work of the local communities through the seven FLAG Boards.”

Almost 400 applications were made to the 7 FLAGs this year. All applications were reviewed by individual FLAG Boards in each of the seven FLAG regions throughout Ireland. The FLAG Boards are comprised of volunteers from the local communities. Projects must be able to demonstrate a clear link to coastal community rejuvenation, enterprise, innovation, job creation and skills enhancement across the fishing, aquaculture and maritime industries.

Irish Sailing has announced its six-strong Topper dinghy squad for competition over the summer of 2019.

Royal Cork Yacht Club sailors Darragh Collins, Oisín Mac Sweeney and Anna Keal will join Dun Laoghaire youths Jacques Murphy of the Royal St George and Adam Irvin of the National Yacht Club, while Becky Lowney of Wexford Harbour Boat and Tennis Club completes the lineup.

The aim of the Irish Sailing Topper squad is to prepare a team for the 2019 Topper World Championships at the Medemblik Regatta Centre in the Netherlands this July.

Their programme will comprise three domestic training camps focused on development, with input from support services such as Sports Med Ireland, Irish Sailing’s partner in strength and conditioning and physical training.

A secondary objective will be teaching these young competitors how a high-performance youth sailing team works both at home and in competition.

In a thrilling medal race final at the Hempel World Sailing Cup Series at Genoa, Finn Lynch from Carlow placed third this afternoon (Sunday 21 April) to claim fifth overall in the men’s single-handed Laser event.

The result marks the third consecutive major regatta for Lynch this year in which he finished in the top 10 of his event in the run-up to Tokyo 2020.

The National Yacht Club sailor entered the medal race final in seventh place overall with the possibility of a silver or bronze medal.

However, it was the sixth-placed Andrew Lewis, from Trinidad, who edged ahead into second place to took bronze, while Hungary’s Jonatan Vadnai placed fifth to win gold, with silver going to Pavlos Kontides who placed eighth in the final. Vadnai’s brother Benjamin won the final race and finished ninth overall.

In fact, any of the 10 finalists were potential medallists and the neck-and-neck race was reflected at the finishing-line with first to last places just 50 metres apart.

As light winds dominated the week at Genoa, so too was the final race sailed in near calm conditions.

“Finn started well, didn’t get into any trouble and sailed to his tactics – a straight race that he executed very well,” said Rory Fitzpatrick, Irish Sailing’s head coach.

“I’m delighted, seeing Finn come through from Toppers to Laser Radial then medalling at Youth Worlds and now contending for medals at senior level is outstanding.”

Ireland has still to qualify in the men’s single-handed Laser event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, with the next opportunity at the class world championships at the Olympic venue in Enoshima, Japan this July.

You can now register for the inaugural Irish Sailing Pathfinder Women at the Helm Regatta, taking place on Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th August at the National Yacht Club, Dun Laoghaire writes Gail McAllister

Around the country, women have been racing against each other for decades but this is the first time a regatta will be held at a national level. The Irish Sailing Pathfinder Women at the Helm regatta is an opportunity for women to set a new goal or to simply enjoy the fun of sailing together and encourage a move from shore to boat, crew to helm or club event to regional event. Female helms currently stand out from the crowd, let’s change that and encourage women to take the helm.

All welcome
We aim to include all skill levels and interests with PY Dinghy Racing and ECHO Handicap Keelboat Racing, encourage teenage participation at a time when many young sailors are dropping out of sport, put on some non-racing options through the Cruising Association of Ireland (CAI), whilst all the while keeping a close eye on our environmental impact.

The event is open to all sailors aged 16+ and on into the 60+ ‘Silver Sailors’. But you must have a woman as helm. In order to encourage male helms to swap rolls to crew but keep existing crews together, male crew will be allowed but with all crew at least 50% female (including helm).

In addition, we have a goal of 50% female race officials and organisers. So if you’re not so sure about the competing but would like to get involved with the race officials then please get in touch to talk about training opportunities.

Prizes
Among the prizes is the newly created and highly covetable Irish Sailing Perpetual Club Team Prize, the only Irish Sailing official interclub award, which is open to all members of Irish Sailing Affiliated Clubs that enter a team of three or more boats of any mix of class.

Being environmentally aware
As part of Irish Sailing’s Sustainability drive the event is registered with Sailors for the Sea Club Regattas and will follow strict eco-friendly guidelines with eco signs, no unnecessary printing, no single use plastic, easily accessible hydration and more.

Partners
We are delighted that Pathfinder, specialist change management consultants, have agreed to sponsor the regatta for three years. Pathfinder are proud to be advocates of diversity and high performing teams, and in partnering with Irish Sailing, we are helping to bring these beliefs from our work to the water.

Irish Sailing and the National Yacht Club are proud to support the Irish Federation of Sport #20x20 and Sport Ireland’s Women in Sport campaigns to increase the participation and visibility of women across all areas of sport.
