Competitors in this year's Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta are set to race for the ultimate bragging rights in a new bonus event.

The Royal Irish Yacht Club is proposing the one-day event on Sunday 31 July modelled on the ISA All Ireland Sailing Championship, where up to 16 teams will compete in a winner-takes-all contest with the prize of a significant voucher to go against their annual Dublin Bay Sailing Club subscription. 

The best helms from Cruisers 1, 2 and 3, White Sails, Sigmas, Dragons, 31.7s and SB3s will compete using the symmetrical kite J80s in a round-robin fleet racing format.

Each participating DBSC class will have one team, selected by being the highest ranked DBSC boat in the Dun Laoghaire Regatta. Each class can decide if the team is chosen on a  design, IRC or ECHO basis.

Irish SB3 crews not going to the 2012 worlds in Australia won't have too far to travel in 2013. COYCH, Hyeres, France has been chosen as the venue for the 2013 Laser SB3 World Championships which will be held in September. This is an exciting time for the Laser SB3 class in France as ownership of boats and racing activity is on the increase. Edward Russo, newly appointed President of the Laser SB3 World Council, has been the driving force re-igniting the Laser SB3 Class in France, and was delighted that the 2013 World Championships will take place in France where the potential for growth of the class is significant.

COYCH was founded in 1982 and is affiliated to the French Sailing Federation. COYCH boasts a highly qualified technical staff and secretariat, with a high level of experience in running world class events. Further news and developments about COYCH can be followed on their website: www.coych.org

In recent years, the Laser SB3 Class has received numerous requests from Yacht Clubs in sailing hot spots around the World to host the classes World Championships. Bid documents are completed by interested Clubs and submitted to the Laser SB3 World Council for review and debate. It's never an easy task for the World Council members choosing from such high calibre invitations, but the acid test for decision making is whether the venue will deliver a high number of entries for a Championship as was the case for the last two Championships: 107 boats at Lake Garda in 2010 and 103 boats at Torquay UK. "With the proximity of strong Italian fleet, with 35 Laser SB3 and the Portugese fleet with 30 Laser SB3, as well as the attraction of the Côte d'Azur in late summer, Hyeres was the best choice for the Laser SB3 class," explained Russo.

Ahead of the 2013 World Championships in Hyeres, the Laser SB3 Fleet will compete at a European Championships in Medemblik, Netherlands, 1-7 September 2012 followed by the World Championships at Hamilton Island, Australia, 13-20 December 2012.

With 40 hulls currently in production, the Laser SB3 continues to grow strongly around the world.

Former Olympic sailor, Laser, Flying Fifteen and Squib champ Peter Kennedy from Strangford Lough produced an overall win in the weekend's SB3 Southern Championships at Tralee Bay Sailing Club. Only 16 boats travelled to Europe's most westerly port for the six race series. Kennedy, the 2009 class champion, ended on 11 points counting only one result out of the top three. He was three points clear of Milvus Milvus (R. Howe) and Howth's Ben Duncan in third on 15 points.

After an unfortunate collision at the end of race three between Kennedy and Royal St. George helm Sean Craig, Kennedy was left with an un-raceable boat until, sportingly, Craig offered his as a replacement. Craig and his crew then sat out what has been described as a 'champagne sailing day' and watched his boat and Kennedy race to victory from the club house.

Top Irish perfomer Mel Collins and his Royal Cork crew have ended up 11th overall at the SB3 Worlds in Torquay today.

The winners were Geoff Carveth, Andy Ramus, Ian Mills and Emma Clarke (GBR) Video with the winners below.. Carveth and crew have sailed an excellent series of qualifying and finals races and win the 2011 Championship with a 4 point lead.

Going afloat this morning, Robert Greenhalgh and crew (GBR) lead the Gold Fleet by 5 points. At the first windward mark of Race 1, Rob Gullan (GBR) lead the course, tailed by John Pollard (GBR) and Geoff Carveth (GBR). Greenhalgh rounded deep in the pack. At the leeward mark, Greenhalgh had recovered some ground, but not enough.

It looked like Rob Gullan was on to take the first of the "2 bullets," he'd joked about in our interview the night before. On the second lap, Gullan lead Pollard and Carveth. Rodion Luka and 'Team Russia' were hot on the heels of the leaders. Choosing the right of the course for his final downwind leg, it paid off and Team Russia went on to win the first race of the day and the first race of their Championship. Carveth finished fourth. Greenhalgh finished seventeenth.

Carveth lead Greenhalgh by 2 points going into the final race of the Zhik SB3 World Championship 2011. The pressure was on Carveth to defend and Greenhalgh to attack.

By the first windward mark of Race 2, Race Ahead, helmed by 2010 South African Sailor of the Year, Asenathi Jim lead the fleet, Carveth rounded 2nd. Greenhalgh rounded 5th. At the leeward gate, Asenathi Jim had extended his lead. Carveth followed the South Africans around the left leeward mark; Greenhalgh went right. By the windward mark on the second lap, positions hadn't changed. Carveth had extended his lead and Greenhalgh's hopes of victory were fading fast.

Asenathi Jim won the final race of the Championships. Carveth crossed the finish line second, securing his victory of the Zhik SB3 World Championships 2011.

"Awesome," "Fantastic," and "Amazing" cheered the crew of Race Team Gill as they hit the dock in Torquay after racing. Carveth explained their day, "In Race 1 today Robert and I sailed our own races, we gained the upper hand and then covered Rob on the start of the second race and took control." The rest they say is history. "We'll be celebrating with a few beers this evening! We've had a great week and we're sailed really well as a crew."

Geoff Carveth is a second time World Champion in the Laser SB3 class, having won the 2008 Worlds in Dun Laoghaire. "It means a lot to win it twice, it shows the first time wasn't just a fluke!"

The Silver fleet of the Zhik Laser SB3 World Championships was won by French team 'Tad Minus', helmed by Vinvent Biarnes and crewed by Nicholas Heintz and Sam Bell.

In 2012, the Laser SB3 European Championships will be held in Medemblik, Netherlands from 1st – 7th September and the World Championships will be held at Hamilton Island, Australia from 13th – 20th December. A win for Royal Cork's Mel Collins and his crew on Sibelus today has moved the top Irish boat up four places in the overall rankings. The Crosshaven crew are now in the top ten of the 103-boat fleet going in to tomorrow's final round of the SB3 World Championships in Torquay, England. Ben Duncan from Howth Yacht Club is 12th. Ross Vaughan is 31st and three Irish boats, Robert howe's Milvus Milvus, Paul McMahon's Quantitive Easing and John O'Driscoll's  Bomchickawahwah are 50-52nd in the gold fleet. The balance of the 11-boat Irish team are in the silver fleet.

Blue skies and brilliant sunshine greeted the 103 boat fleet of Laser SB3s on Day 4 of the Zhik SB3 World Championships 2011. Unfortunately the wind was late arriving and the "AP" was raised for over an hour. Eventually, the wind put in an appearance and as the afternoon went on the pressure increased and as forcast, the direction tracked right.

All eyes were on Robert Greenhalgh (GBR) and the crew this morning after their strong performance yesterday. At the first windward mark "Red" rounded towards the middle of the gold fleet, but the crew managed to pick up the wind shift and improve their position to finish the race in third place. The race was won by Irish entry Mel Collins (IRL) and his crew on Sibelus. Sarah Allan was back in action and finished the race second.

The rock star crew on One Design Sailing, Nathan Outteridge, Ian Brown and Tom Slingsby (AUS), have had a difficult Championship and today was no exception. They were called over the line in race two, but didn't hear the Race Committees radio announcement of their bow number. After leading the fleet all the way around the course, they finished first. The news of their "OCS" was a bitter blow for the Australian team. Having finished tenth in race one and fifth in race three, it's fair to say One Design Sailing's performance was back, but their luck is yet to be found.

Gill Race Team, helmed by Craig Burlton (GBR) have found their form today. The second discard has now been applied to the results which puts Burlton in third position overall. "From the forecast, it looked like it was going to be a really tough day, but we've worked it out today and the breeze was much more consistent. The smiles are back onboard!" said Craig as we had a chat on the harbour-side this evening. Going into the final day, there is a twenty point gap between Burlton and Greenhalgh, "It would be a big call to beat Rob, and we'd have to rely on him having some major errors tomorrow. But we're happy to be in third place this evening."

Yesterday, Rob Gullan (GBR), the helm of Pieter Heyn's "Parkway Pirates" took a great leap up the overall results. This evening Parkway Pirates lie in fifth position, sixteen points behind Glenn Bourke (AUS) in forth. "We don't do a lot of sailing together and it's taken us a bit of time to work out the conditions in Tor Bay. We sailed all of our qualifying races on the Orange course, but our results have improved since we've been sailing in the Gold fleet on the Yellow course." With just two races left to sail, Gullan and crew will be looking to sail two more consistent races to protect their fifth position. "If somebody had said to us before this event we'd be fifth at this stage, we'd have taken that, the competition is the hardest it's been at any of the World Championships so far."

This evening the "WKD Girls" are in town to entertain the competitors at the Zhik SB3 World Championships, though I expect for many at the top of the gold fleet the order of the day will be dinner and an early night ahead of the final battle on Tor Bay tomorrow.

Royal Cork's Mel Collins continues to move up the leaderboard of the SB3 World Championships finishing 11,10 and 22 in the gold fleet today to place 14th overall and overhauling Howth Yacht Club's Ben Duncan now in 16th place. Results and photos below.

Lighter, but more stable conditions made for a smoother day on the water on Day 3 of the Championships in Torquay, UK. Following two days of qualifying races, today the fleets split onto their Gold and Silver courses. For the Gold Fleet today, the competition got a lot harder. Reviewing the results after a further 3 races, it was a day of snakes and ladders for many.

Overnight leader Peter Saxton (GBR) didn't enjoy the best of days. After racking up a 18, 20 and 43 Saxton drops to thirteenth overall. This is a disappointing set of results after such a strong start to his Championship. 2009 Laser SB3 World Champion, Craig Burlton, had a down, up, down day adding a 21, 2 and 29 to his score card. Burlton drops three places to eight overall; he won't be happy with that.

Jez Entwistle entering the Gold Fleet in thirteenth position this morning. Leading at the first windward mark in the first race, "Perky III" finished 4th in the first race of the day. Building on their first race performance, Entwistle lead again at the first windward mark of race two. This time he managed to protect his lead and extend on the downwind leg and went on to win the race. "We've not sailed together as a crew before, but everything is coming together nicely, Ali [Hall] is a great tactician and doing a great job of picking our lanes out of the starts. We are all really enjoying ourselves."

Another boat that has shot up the leader board today is "Team Russia", Oleg Zherebtsov's Laser SB3 helmed by Rodion Luka. "We've had a very good day today and we are very happy on the boat. We have a good attitude after one black flag and one disqualification, we have everything to gain. I have a good feeling for the shifts now and in this boat, there is time to think about what you will do, so it is very tactical racing!" explained Rodion Luka (UKR) after racing this evening. At the end of Day 3, Team Russia have climbed fourteen places and are now eleventh overall. I'd call that a good day at the office.

After leading Fleet A on day one of the Zhik SB3 World Championships, Robert Greenhalgh (GBR) slid to sixth place yesterday. Today, the crew onboard Red were back in race winning form. Adding a 1, 3, 1 to their results, Robert now leads the fleet by nine points. "It's been a really hard week so far, but it came together again today." For the next two days of sailing Robert's aim is, "To make the bad bits better and the good bits better too." As we recognised at the beginning of this championship, consistency is king in the Laser SB3 fleet and it looks like Greenhalgh has this under control.

This evening competitors will attend the Zhik SB3 World Championships Party at the Palace Hotel, Torquay. Prizes will be awarded for "Boat of the Day" for the first three days of racing and a lucky dip draw will see one team win a jib provided by LaserPerformance.

A second in the last race of today's SB3 World Championships gives Royal Cork's Mel Collins 17th overall and keeps the Crosshaven trio top Irish crew in Torquay. Howth's Ben Duncan – racing for New Zealand – is 11th overall. Full results below. It's been a tough day on the water at Day 2 of the event for competitors and Race Officers alike. Shifting winds combined with general recalls and last minute abandonments meant a long day on the water for everyone involved. Races 4, 5 and 6 of the championship have now been completed and qualifying for the gold and silver fleets is complete.

After lying second overall at the end of the first day of the Championship, Peter Saxton (GBR) and his crew on Rola-Trac had a poor first race today. Clearly undeterred, the Rola-Trac crew got back into the groove for the second and third races, achieving a 1st and 3rd place in the Orange fleet. Saxton now shows a score card of 1, 5, 2, (36), 1, 3 and leads the Championship by 2 points.

Italian entry "Stenghele" helmed by Roberto Caresani (ITA) and crewed by Pietro Negri and Enrico Fonda put in a strong performance on the Yellow course. "We had a good day today," explained bow man Enrico, "We've had 3 good races! We won the first race, we lead the first beat and after a gybe set, we literally flew downwind, extending our lead to 200m on the next boat!" Roberto added, "It's been a lucky day and we are very happy with our results."

Craig Burlton (GBR) lies 5th overall going into the gold fleet and finals races. Catching up with Craig and crew after racing, it was clear that they were disappointed with their performance. "It's been a tough day, the wind has been really shifty and we've found the starts hard. The third race today wasn't good and we got stuck in a hole downwind." There are high expectations onboard and their frustration showed. "We've made some stupid mistakes and not quite executed our attack on this event." But 5th overall at this stage of the event isn't too shabby is it?!

Many entrants are still struggling to find their form and continue to battle the vagaries of Tor Bay's wind conditions. 2010 World Champion Jerry Hill arrived in Torquay with high hopes of defending his title, but this evening returns ashore deflated. "It's not been a great day...we were over the line in the first race, 7th in the second and then really deep in the third race today." Hill has sailed in the Laser SB3 class since the beginning and has been a driving force behind the organisation of the World Championship in Torquay. It's unfortunate to see him struggling to find his form and lying in 29th place going into the gold fleet finals.

With the challenging conditions that Tor Bay is providing, it's certain that the winner of the Zhik SB3 Worlds will be a deserving Champion. The standard of the fleet is extremely high and nobody is yet willing to bet their life savings on who will lift the beautiful Waterford Crystal trophy on Friday 20th May. With six qualifying races now complete, the pressure really heats up as the gold and silver fleet finals begin.

Royal Cork Yacht Club's Mel Collins is top Irish boat in 24th place after the first days racing of the 2011 SB3 World Championships in Torbay. Scroll down for pics and Video.

Collins scored 18, 8, 21 to be in the top quarter of the fleet, two points ahead of Irish East Coast Champion Ben Duncan who is sailing for his native New Zealand. The next Irish boat is Howth's Paul McMahon in 46th with Irish placings also in 47th, 48th and 49th. Full Results below.

The 103 boat fleet of Laser SB3's left Torquay Harbour this morning for the first three races. Split into 2 fleets, Orange and Yellow, the fleet lined up for the first scheduled race at 11.00 am. The Race Committee, on both courses, managed to get both fleets underway exactly to schedule. Impressive.

On the Yellow course, Robert Greenhalgh (GBR) showed his talent early on. Notching up a 1, 2, 1 on day one of a World Championships is a score card anyone would be proud of. Peter Saxton (GBR) won the first race on the Orange course and followed up with a 5, 2 placing him second overall overnight on day 1.

Nathan Outteridge (AUS) collected bowman Tom Slingsby (AUS) from the airport at 1am this morning, but lack of sleep and time on the water as a crew did little to dampen his crew's performance. "This is my first day on bow ever! There's a bit on when you get to the bottom mark" smiled Slingsby after completing the first race of the Championships, and their first race ever as a team with fellow Aussie Ian Brown.

The Orange course suffered 2 general recalls as the Race Committee tried to get the second race of the day away. Not deterred by the delay, Glenn Bourke (AUS) dominated the race, extending his lead on each leg. Chatting to Glenn last night he claimed to be "rusty", but today he posted 5, 1, 11 on the score sheet. "More time in the boat will help us iron out some of our creases, but to take a win on the first day of an event like this always makes you feel good!"

2010 Laser SB3 World Champion Jerry Hill (GBR) had a difficult day to start the event. Sailing on the Orange course the 3 Sad Old Blokes struggled in the first race, finishing in 25th position. After starting deep in the second race, they picked their way back to a respectable 9th and despite damage, finished 6th in the third race of the day. "It was hard today, really hard," explained Hill before disappearing to repair his boat.

Joe Llewellyn (GBR) grew up sailing in Tor Bay, and finished the first day of the Zhik SB3 World Championships with a win on the Orange course. Chatting to Joe in the bar of the Royal Torbay Yacht Club after racing he explained, "It was hard conditions today and we had a bad second race. We had some luck in the third race, we benefitted from some of the shifts and we won!" Joe recently became a father again, this time to twins, "I'm looking forward to another sleepless night tonight, and another day on the water tomorrow!"

Three further races are scheduled for Tuesday 17th May. The fleet is slit again, simply by their odd or even overall position at the end of the first day of racing, for the final day of qualifying races.

Joker was the winner of the Royal Alfred's J109 Baily Bowl prize and White Mischief was the Sigma 33 winner following a one day event on Dublin bay at the weekend. The regatta featured a merger of results with Dublin Bay Sailing Club.

There were two windward leeward races on Saturday morning staged for a fleet of seven J109s and six Sigma 33s. Results from Saturday afternoon's regular DBSC racing were then added to the score tally. The full results are: Sigma 33: 1. White Mischief (Tim Goodbody) 2. Rupert Dick Lovegrove 3. Alandra. (John Molloy) J109: 1. Joker (John Maybury) 2. Storm. (P. Dillon) 3. Jalapeno (Dermod Baker).

The second part of the Baily Bowl one design competition will be held next weekend for Dragons, Flying fifteens, Squibs and SB3s, although that sportsboat class says it has not had much local take up for the event to date.
