#Canoeing: Jenny Egan finished eighth in the final of the K1 500 at the canoe sprint European Olympic Qualifier at Duisburg this morning, outside the places which would have qualified her for a place at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in this class. She has also qualified for the K1 200 final, which takes place later in the day.

#Canoeing: Ireland brought their tally of finals reached to four at the canoe sprint European Olympic Qualifier in Duisburg today. Jenny Egan made her way to a second final – the K1 200 – and Tom Brennan for the men’s equivalent in the afternoon session. They will qualify for Rio if they finish in the top two in their finals.

#Canoeing - Coming off a strong 2015, where she claimed the bronze medal at the World Championships in the Czech Republic last summer, Lucan's Jenny Egan took time to answer a few questions from The Irish Times before her pre-Olympic training kicks up a gear.

Indeed, if not for a short illness laying her low for a few days over Christmas, Egan's dedication would already be off the charts – with as many as 16 sessions of land-based hard winter training every week.

But it's worth it for the Rio 2016 hopeful, who says she was "on cloud nine" for most of 2015 with her bronze medal followed by almost reaching the podium again in Baku in June, a sixth-place finish in the K1 5,000m in Milan and a fourth-place finish in the Canoe Marathon Worlds in Hungary.

And that's not to mention a win in September's Liffey Descent with her boyfriend Jonathan Simmons in the mixed K2.

#Canoeing: Jenny Egan finished fourth in the senior K1 event at the Canoe Marathon World Championships in Gyor in Hungary. Anna Koziskova of the Czech Republic took gold, covering the 26.1 kilometre course in one hour 56 minutes 28.847 seconds, while Egan was three minutes and just under 50 seconds further back. Egan was 57 seconds behind bronze medallist Kristina Bedec of Serbia.

#CANOEING: Jenny Egan finished fourth, in a photo finish, in the final of the K1 5000 metres at the European Games in Azerbaijan today. Egan was just .455 of a second off matching the bronze medal she achieved at the European Canoe Sprint Championships in the Czech Republic in May. That race was won by Maryna Litvinchuk of Belarus, who again took gold today in Baku. Britain’s Lani Belcher, who was second, and Renata Csay of Hungary edged Egan out of medal contention. Both were within .7 of a second of Egan’s time.

Earlier Jenny Egan finished sixth in the B final of the K1 500 metres, 15^th overall. Andrzej Jezierski finished fourth in the B Final of the men’s C1 200 metres, 13^th overall. Peter Egan finished 21^st in the men’s K1 5,000 metres.

# CANOEING: Ireland’s three junior competitors all completed the testing course on the river Tiber in Rome at the Canoe Marathon World Championships today. Sean McCarthy took 22nd place in the junior K1, and Mark Hartnett 32nd. Cait Broderick took 21st in the women’s event.

Ireland’s senior competitors, Jenny and Peter Egan, will compete tomorrow.

In the Masters events, which preceded the World Championships, Malcolm Banks finished fourth and Deaglan O Drisceoil fifth.

#CANOEING - The Evening Herald reports that top Irish canoeist Jenny Egan is headed to Florida for a few months of training towards a spot at the 2012 Olympics.

A sprint and marathon racer, Egan was named as The Irish Times/Irish Sport Council's Sportswoman of the Month for May 2010 in recognition of some very impressive performances.

Indeed, the Kildare native enjoyed much success in 2012, with second place in the 5000m at the World Sprint Cup in the Czech Republic and a new Irish record in the 500m at the Canoe Slalom Worlds in Hungary among her achievements.

Heading into 2012, the Salmon Leap club member will surely be shrugging off setbacks like her crash in the heat and humidity of Singapore at the Canoe Marathon Worlds last October.

The new year brings a new focus, as Egan will concentrate on the 500m and 200m K1 sprint distances for the London games, with the final qualifiers - for just 15 spots - taking place in Poland in April.
