There was no joy this morning for Ireland’s Michael Maher in the semi-final of the lightweight single sculls at the Rowing World Cup regatta in Munich. To reach the A Final Maher needed to find a place in the top three places, but very early on these were filled by Daniele Gilardoni of Italy, Maxime Goisset of France and Japan’s Hideki Omoto and they rebuffed all challenges. Maher filled fifth for much of the 2,000 metres but Poland’s Milosz Jankowski pushed past him in the third quarter – and launched a serious bid for a top-three place. Maher finished sixth and is set to compete in today's B Final for places seven to 12.
In the E Final of the lightweight double sculls, Ireland’s second crew of Peter Hanily and Justin Ryan finished fifth, placing them 29th overall. Sarah Dolan was withdrawn from the C Final of the lightweight single scull – a precautionary measure because of a sore rib, according to team management.
