Two Kayakers Washed Ashore

Two kayakers on the Irish Sea were given medical attention this evening after abandoning their kayaks whilst out at sea off Morfa Nefyn and spending three hours in the water trying to make it back to shore.

North Wales Ambulance Control contacted Holyhead Coastguard at 10.06 pm to report that a member of the public had called to inform them that two kayakers had knocked on their door asking if they could come inside to warm up after being in the water, and that they potentially needed medical attention. Holyhead Coastguard sent the Porthdinllaen Coastguard Rescue Team to meet the casualties to find out what had happened and assist in locating their kayaks.

Once on scene, the coastguard rescue team reported back to the Operations Room that the two male kayakers (one aged 23 and one aged 24) had set out from Morfa Nefyn beach at 7pm, had gone out approximately half a mile and then panicked, abandoned the kayaks and been washed ashore.  When they finally made it ashore just before 10pm, they knocked on the door of a nearby house to ask for help and an ambulance was called.  The coastguard rescue team spoke to the two casualties and the kayaks were recovered.

Barry Priddis, Holyhead Coastguard Watch Manager said:

"Although this incident contains a catalogue of errors that we would warn against, the fact that these two kayakers were both wearing lifejackets undoubtedly saved their lives tonight.  We always advise members of the public not to go out on the water in conditions or distances that are beyond their capability, and if they do find themselves in such a situation, to call the Coastguard and ask for help.  Attempting to swim ashore is very dangerous, especially with outside temperatures as they are at the moment and had these two not been wearing lifejackets which kept them afloat we could be looking at a very different outcome."

Ireland’s Ciaran Heurteau finished 28th in the K1 semi-finals at the Canoe Slalom World Championships this morning in Bratislava in Slovakia. The top 10 go to the final, but a place in the top 15 countries would have qualified the boat for London 2012.  Heurteau’s placing  fell outside this mark.

Leading Irish canoeist and Kildare native, Jenny Egan has become the first canoeist to be awarded The Irish Times/Irish Sports Council 'Sportswoman of the Month' award for May, following her impressive performance in taking a silver medal in the 5,000m sprint canoe K1 at the World Cup event in the Czech Republic last month.

A member of the renowned Salmon Leap club in Leixlip, Jenny's path to success was evident at an early stage with her performances at junior level placing 15th and 5th in successive years, and then claiming a silver medal at the 2005 World Junior Marathon Championships in Perth, Australia. Since entering the senior ranks in 2006, Jenny has made steady and encouraging progress, gaining her first medal with a bronze at the British Senior National Marathon Championship and achieving a ranking of 15th in Europe in the Under-23 category in her first year.

Her big breakthrough came last year at the Senior Sprint Canoe World Cup in Szeged, Hungary where she took silver in the 5,000m becoming the first Irish female sprint canoeist to win a medal of any colour, and only missed out on gold by just six seconds to winner, Renata Csay of Hungary.

Jenny's strong performances so far this year, saw her take a silver medal at the World Cup 2 race in the Czech Rep. The 5000m event is one of the most popular of all in championships. This was no exception; quickly a group of 5 girls broke from the field headed by Lani Belcher, Great Britain, Jenny Egan, Anna Adamova, Czech Republic and Kristina Zur of the USA. The Austrian, Anna Lehaci, could not keep up with the pace. So it was a four person fight for the medals. However, due to a miscalculation the bell for the final lap was sounded early confusing the athletes leading the race. Eventually all the athletes completed the full distance with Lani Belcher (GBR) sprinting to the Gold medal. Due to the confusion two silver medals were given to Adamova and Egan with Bronze going to Zur.

With Jenny's medal tally on the international canoeing circuit beginning to rack up, it is only a matter of time before she makes the biggest leap on the podium to gold medal position with the support of her family, especially her brother and former canoeing international Peter. The DCU sports science graduate joins, jockey Nina Carberry, Irish Irish female rugby captain Fiona Coghlan, golfing twins Lisa and Leona Maguire and cross country runner Fionnuala Britton in the race for the overall accolade of The Irish Times/Irish Sports Council Sportswoman of the Year 2011.

Established in 2004, the aim of the Sports Woman of the Year awards is to recognise the abilities and achievements of women in Irish sports. The awards run over a twelve month period, with the judges selecting a winner each month for her ability to excel at sport. From the twelve monthly winners, the overall Sportswoman of the Year is selected and announced.

Elaine 'Shooter' Alexander's epic challenge to become the first woman from Northern Ireland to circumnavigate Ireland by kayak is approaching Dublin's coastline.

The challenge will involve a solo voyage of 1000 miles battling tides, headlands, cliffs, not to mention unpredictable weather.

Elaine is just one week into her challenge having taken on a constant barrage of strong head winds en route to Dublin. She is currently just north of Drogheda and weather pending hopes to be in North Dublin (Skerries, Howth) tomorrow, passing Dublin Bay Friday, and South Dublin (Bray and Greystones) Saturday.

She is camping on route and would really appreciate somewhere to shower, store her boat etc close to the sea. You can see exactly where she is by scrolling down this post.

Bangor Lifeboat launched at 11:40 am on Monday 24th January to rescue two canoeists from a stretch of water lying between the Copeland Island and Donaghadee known locally as the Donaghadee Sound. One of the canoeists had apparently entered the water and was in difficulty.

Belfast Coastguard requested RNLI Bangor Lifeboat to launch.

Within minutes of the rescue pagers being activated, Bangor volunteer crew had assembled and had launched the RNLI's fast response Atlantic 85 type lifeboat the 'Jessie Hillyard '.

With a top speed of 35 knots Bangor Lifeboat quickly arrived on scene.

The Fishery Protection vessel also received the rescue alert and was by minutes the first vessel on the scene. With the Fishery Protection vessel providing a weather lee, crew from Bangor Lifeboat quickly plucked the exhausted canoeist from the water. The second canoeist was then brought aboard Bangor Lifeboat along with both canoes.

Donaghadee Lifeboat who also launched to this rescue stood close by to offer additional medical support if required.

Bangor Lifeboat accompanied by Donaghadee Lifeboat returned to Donaghadee Harbour and both canoeists were landed safely ashore.

Ewan Scott, helmsman onboard Bangor Lifeboat praised the actions of both volunteer crews. He said 'The dedication and commitment of both Bangor and Donaghadee volunteer crews is evident in the professional manner in which they undertook this rescue' He added 'We're happy that both canoeists are now safely ashore.'

At around 11.30 this morning Belfast Coastguard were alerted to two people in distress after one of them was pitched into the water from his capsized canoe and had been struggling, without success to get back into the craft. The call came from his colleague.

The emergency call stated that the two men, both in their early 50s, were off Copeland Sound between the coast and Donaghadee. Both men were wearing lifejackets. The man in difficulty was exhausted and needed assistance. The seas on scene were described as having a heavy swell.

Both the Bangor and Donaghadee RNLI inshore lifeboats were asked to launch and a fisheries patrol vessel, the 'Queen of Ulster' also offered assistance after hearing the radio exchanges.

During the incident, Belfast Coastguard kept in contact with the canoeist who had remained in his craft to ensure that both men were aware of the situation and that help was proceeding.

Louis McGookin, Duty Watch Manager at Belfast Coastguard said

"It was clear that the man in the water was absolutely exhausted and simply was unable to get back into his craft. Sea temperatures are at around 8 degrees Celsius at present and hypothermia is an ever present danger in prolonged immersion. Fortunately they were able to contact the Coastguard and using our knowledge of the tides in the area we were able to pinpoint his location. Both men were given a medical check when they arrived back at the shoreline and neither required any treatment."
