#MarineWildlife - BBC presenter and explorer Ben Fogle is fronting a new expedition by a documentary crew to find evidence of great white sharks living in the Irish Sea.
As the Mirror reports, the "top secret" mission launched on Friday (21 August), dragging a whale carcass rigged with underwater cameras as bait into the Celtic Deep – a hotspot for dolphins and fin whales – to attract any great whites that might be feeding in the waters between Britain and Ireland.
"We might change what we know about the British Atlantic waters and what’s in them,” says Fogle of the hunt for the apex predator, which has been spotted as close as 168 miles from Land's End.
In less hair-raising marine wildlife news, sightings of humpback whales around the Irish coast have risen by 50% in some areas, as the Belfast Telegraph reports.
And the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) estimates that as many as 60 individual humpback whales are visiting Ireland's waters, from Cork to Antrim.
The news came ahead of yesterday's All Ireland Whale Watch Day, which was unfortunately a washout in most parts of the country.
But it's always worth looking out to sea whenever the opportunity arises, as you may see a sight like the one Chris Harrington was treated to in Glengarriff Harbour recently when a pod of dolphins frolicked alongside his boat.
