Goacher and Evans take a flying lead

22nd August 2008

Rival sailmakers topped the leader board at the Flying fifteen European championships in Kinsale as the competition reached the halfway stage yesterday.

After four races sailed a strong British team continues to dominate the championships but yesterday afternoon world champion Mike Hart and Richard Riggs slipped in to the 20s in race three and lost the overall lead to Steve Goacher and Phil Evans. Both races were sailed in less than six knots of breeze. The slip up not only cost the pair the lead but moved Northampton's Alan Bax and Bill Masterman into second overall. Ireland's main hopes of a top finish lie with Strangford Lough's Darren Martin and Simon Murray who lie eighth in the 56 boat fleet. Next is Martin's club mate Brian McKee in 12th. Race officer Alan Crosbie has so far completed a full series at the harbour mouth but it has not been without delays caused by light shifting westerly winds. Light winds are expected again this morning (Friday) for a further two scheduled races but gale force winds are expected. A situation, say some competitors, that may yet cut the eight race series short. Event photos are at: http://www.fotosail.com/08ffeuros
