Dublin Bay boats heading to Bangor

28th May 2009

Already berthed in Bangor Marina are two of several Dublin Bay boats expected to compete in the Hamilton Shipping Sigma 33 Irish and Open Championships being held at Royal Ulster Yacht Club next weekend (5th -7th June). The current titleholder, Tim Goodbody from Royal Irish and Aubrey Leggett’s Elandra from the National came straight from the Scottish Series at Tarbert. These two together with the Clarke/Maguire duo’s Gwili Two entry, also from Royal Irish, are the forerunners of a welcome group from the Dun Laoghaire area.

The growing class of nine Sigma 33 one design yachts in Bangor is expected to be joined by visitors from Scotland, the Isle of Man and Strangford Lough as well.

Event organiser is Steve McWatters and in charge of racing will be Principal Race Officer Robin Gray, who together with the committee boat team and accompanying mark layers, can be relied upon to run the event like clockwork. Nine races are scheduled to be raced in Belfast Lough, the first three running on Friday 5th June.

Gordon Hamilton, Managing Director of Hamilton Shipping, is delighted to be involved with the event. “This is the second time we have sponsored the Sigma Irish Championships and we are delighted to be associated with the competition”, he said.

The championships will run from 5th until 7th June, with the fleet based in Bangor Marina
