Google mapping ocean floor
Google is filling in the blue parts of the map, taking its ocean mapping to the next level. Over the past year, the company has worked with more than 100 partners adding hundreds of placemarks to more than 20 ocean layer, all of which will now form part of the ocean layers on the free Google Earth software.

Google has worked with National Geographic, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, as well as the Mission Blue Foundation, to create various layers of marine information, with photos and info on wildlife and marine flora.

The Mission Blue Foundation is working to create a series of protected marine areas called Hope Spots, which will also be included in the Google Earth layers.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
