Recalling seamen of the Emergency

4th January 2011

Can you help? This letter appeared in the Irish Times this morning...

Madam, – A new project aims to preserve the memory of individual seafarers who were killed as a result of belligerent action while they were serving on Irish-registered vessels during the second World War.

Relatives of those who died on Irish ships during the Emergency and who wish to have their own family experiences of that time recorded for posterity are invited to write up their story and send it to [email protected].

It is intended to publish in due course on our website and in book format a compilation of all articles submitted. Any photographs, documents, etc, loaned will be returned. Further information at www.irishseamensrelativesassociation.org. – Yours, etc,

PETER MULVANY,
Chairperson,
Irish Seamen's Relatives
Association (1939-46),
Conquer Hill Road, Dublin 3.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
