Afloat.ie: Seascapes Goes Back Into the Past

26th November 2009

There are at least two trips down memory lane tomorrow night on Seascapes (Friday November 27th, 2009, 10.30pm, RTE Radio 1), as one Irish seaman recalls his incarceration in a German concentration camp, and a Dublin inner city parish remembers seafarers who died. Tom and his team have several other reports to broadcast – details over the fold.

Also on Seascapes this Friday night (and on Monday mornings at 5am):

 • Shipping decline eases – is this an indicator for the economy

• How one of the famous Dunkirk Small Boat Rescue Fleet ended up in a Kerry port

• Killybegs still has problems with Norwegian and Icelandic fishermen

• Latest news from the Inland Waterways

• Review of the latest marine news and views.

A perfect Christmas gift, the Seascapes book, published by Mercier Press to mark 1,000 editions of the programme, can be ordered via the website.

Seascapes, presented by Tom MacSweeney and produced by Marcus Connaughton, is also available as a podcast and is broadcast twice a week on the digital station, RTE Choice, on Wednesday mornings at 7.30am and Saturday lunchtimes at 12.30pm. Listeners can also hear Seascapes as a download on Sky Digital 0160 – NTL Channel 901 and in Northern Ireland on Virgin Media, Channel 917.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
