Ballycotton RNLI was launched at 7.12pm yesterday evening (Sunday 30 August) to aid a dolphin that was stranded due to extreme high tides in a bogland near Ballycotton.
Both the all-weather and the inshore lifeboats with their volunteer crews were launched at 7.12pm following a request from the Ballycotton Coast Guard Unit who were also on scene.
Once on scene, Ballycotton RNLI crew members Rupert Hugh-Jones and William Sliney entered the water and assisted the dolphin back to deeper waters in Ballycotton Bay.
Speaking following the call out, Ballycotton RNLI Coxswain Eolan Walsh said: 'The dolphin appeared to be quite young and may have possibly been separated from its pod. On arrival, two of the volunteer crew members entered the water and swam alongside the dolphin and guided it towards open water. This was an unusual request for Ballycotton RNLI but we were happy to assist'.
