Thursday morning 9th June 2016 and thick fog and no wind, will we get racing in Dublin Bay this evening? Jack Roy must have been on his prayer mat as the afternoon cleared and a nice 14 knots appeared for DBSC racing.

There was much “shuffling” of pairings on the platform with Ken Dumpleton & guest crew Ken Ryan together on Kooigjog. Ross Doyle as guest helm with Frank Burgess on Snow White, John Whelan with Alan Balfe on Perfect Ten. Peter O’Callaghan guesting with Ralph on Tuugannini and Chris & Alan back together again on frequent flyer. Regretfully no crew available for A Mere Triffle. Volunteers required in a hospitable class.

With a strong ebb tide and fifteen fifteens on the line the fleet got away, well almost. Some tight bunching at the committee boat end and frequent flyer jumping the gun and having to go back over the line. The first beat to Battery with ffling Brian O’Neill & Mary Jane Mulligan) followed by fflogger (Alan Dooley & Joe Hickey) and Ignis Caput (Dave Mulvin & Ronan Beirne) heading out to sea and the rest of the fleet heading inshore. At Battery it was the seaward boats ahead followed by frenetic (Mick & Hugh Cahill) and Kooigjog.

Around the mark spinnakers up and out to Omega and a gybe on to Pier. At Pier there was some bunching with four boats rounding together which resulted in some “focused” discussion in the bar after and talk of protests.

A beat back to Bulloch and once around no spinnaker hoist for fflogger having lost her halyard and with Ignis Caput close behind ffling out to East mark where after the gybe Ignis Caput overhauled ffling to take the lead and on to Pier mark and to the line for the gun. ffling second with frenetic third and Kooigjog fourth.

With discards now in place Ignis Caput discards a first in the Thursday series.

What looked like a hopeless case all day morphed into a decent night's Fireball racing. All day Dun Laoghaire was enveloped in a mild airless haze but when Fireballers arrived to hope against hope that there might be racing flags were weakly fluttering in the harbour area. Seven boats made it outside the harbour where the committee set up a W-L course with the start line quite close to the cruiser Harbour mark. The start took place at low water with a very mild flooding tide just starting. The line being slightly boat end biased the bigger group tustled for that end and the prize of first tack in out of the tide. But was it out of the tide? The course configuration was further out than a typical DBSC Tuesday race and in all likelihood the tide was fairly even over the course. The wind however was not, there were signs that the better breeze was offshore. Thus the Clancys and Noel Butler Stephen Oram got cleanly away and took an initial hitch inshore, while Frank Miller/Grattan Donnelly had a messy start and headed out to sea to clear their wind. The latter went from last place to third by this punt and the places remained more or less constant to the finish where the Clancys took the gun from Butler/Oram. Those who went inshore attempting to avoid the strengthening tide found only less wind and woe.

The second race followed a similar pattern but this time Miller/Donnelly put their money where their instincts lay and headed straight out to sea off the unfavoured pin end, got their breeze and led to the windward mark , and maintained a reasonable lead to the finish, chased down by Butler/Oram, the Clancys, and Louise McKenna/Hermine O'Keeffe. The breeze held up to the extent that the fleet were able to carry spinnakers all the way home. All in all this was another good evening of racing stolen from what had all day looked like a hopeless case.

#DBSC - With just two points separating the top three SB20s, fireworks were guaranteed for the final day and last two races of Saturday Series 1, writes Michael O'Connor.

Series leader Bango (James Gorman, Philip Lawton and Keith Staunton) held the slenderest of leads over the chasing pack, including Alert Packaging (Justin Burke et al) and Sin Bin (Michael O'Connor et al), but with Beijing 470 Olympian Lawton on board Bango calling the shots, they certainly came prepared for the fight.

Two races were scheduled in a light (6-10 knots) shifty east-northeasterly breeze that was oscillating through 40 degrees over the course of the day. The patchy and shifty breeze meant that there were big gains or losses to be made on each leg so it definitely wasn't over until you had crossed the finish line.

Race 1 saw a split of the fleet up the first beat, with Bango, Smoke on the Water (Bob Hobby, Louise McKenna et al) and Sin Bin going right in search of pressure and Alert Packaging, Bad (Jerry and Jimmy Dowlng), Defiant (G Jones et al), Timber (Marty Cuppage) and Sunday Brunch (Dave Dwyer at al) choosing the left.

A big left-hand shift up the first beat meant that 'the lefts' certainly had it and Alert Packaging, Defiant and Bad led into the weather mark while series leader Bango and Sin Bin had much work to do to catch up.

Down the first run, Alert Packaging and Bad gybed off onto port towards the left of the run in search of better breeze while Defiant, Bango and Sin Bin continued on on starboard towards the right of the run in expectation of the shift back. The right side of the run paid and by the leeward gate Alert Packaging held onto the narrowest of leads over Sin Bin and Defiant, who rounded the left-hand gate mark overlapped in hot pursuit of Alert Packaging.

Alert Packaging called the second beat beautifully, catching the breeze and the shifts to perfection and extended out their lead on the chasing pack. They rounded the weather mark with a handsome lead over the fleet and went on to take the gun after a leisurely stroll down the run followed by Sin Bin some distance behind in second.

There was still some drama to come, though, as Bango and Defiant were battling it out for third place coming into the final gate just to weather of the finish line. A quick gybing duel ensued and the more experienced heads on Bango saw them out gybe their rivals and get around the gate first and take third place.

Unfortunately for Defiant, disaster struck as they hit the gate mark, hooked it and dragged it out of position, much to the consternation of the following boats trying to finish. (It's a requirement to go through the gate on this last downwind leg.) Bad, Sunday Brunch and Smoke on the Water managed to take full advantage of their misfortune and claimed fourth, fifth and sixth places respectfully.

After the first race (race 7 of the series), the second discard kicked in, resulting in a shuffle at the top of the standings. Sin Bin now led by a few points from Bango and Alert Packaging but it was still all to play for as big numbers were possible in the light shifty breeze.

In the second race of the day, the final race of the first Saturday series, the OOD signalled three rounds of the outer course for the SBs. The majority of the fleet decided to go right up the first beat in search of pressure with the exception of Alert Packaging, Timber and Sunday Brunch. The rest of the fleet should really start paying attention to what these guys are doing because yet again they came up trumps at the weather mark. Again Sin Bin and Bango had left themselves with a lot to do.

A split down the run saw the fleet compress once more at the leeward gate and the back markers made gains on the leaders with Bango, Defiant and Sin Bin getting back in the hunt.

Bango and Sin Bin, keeping a watchful eye on each other, drag raced out to the right hand corner of the next beat taking some ground off Alert Packaging in the process who was methodically picking their way through the shifts up the middle of the beat.

It was definitely a day to be behind on the run and again the boats astern managed to make gains on the boats ahead on the second run. By the final leeward gate, Alert Packaging's lead had been cut to around four boat lengths from Sin Bin, with Bango a further four boat lengths back. So it was all down to the last lap.

The three lead boats got onto starboard tack immediately after the leeward gate and picked their way up the left side of the beat into the oncoming traffic of the squibs, sportsboat fleet, Dragons and Flying Fifteens. Tight covering tacks were being thrown in like confetti and with no quarter being asked or given, the oncoming traffic offered some opportunity for the following boats to break free from a tight cover.

Towards the top third of the beat, one such opportunity arose with Sin Bin managing to get some separation to the left of Alert Packaging. A favourable left-hand shift was enough to allow them sneak into a two-boat-length lead just before the weather mark.

Alert Packaging were not done yet, though, and chased hard down the run, gradually eating into Sin Bin's slender lead. As the two leaders simultaneously gybed onto port and sailed high towards the left side of the run – hoping to get over the boat ahead or protecting their breeze, depending on the boat you were in – Bango astern had one last throw of the dice and continued on starboard down the run to the opposite, right hand side of the course.

Alert Packaging, seeing that they couldn't quite get over the top of Sin Bin before the layline and in an effort to both overtake Sin Bin and keep in touch with Bango, gybed back onto starboard 15 boat lengths shy of the layline to the gate. So now we had Sin Bin out left, Alert Packaging in the middle and Bango out right –the top three boats in the series, all charging towards the final leeward gate to decide the winner.

Sin Bin continued to the starboard layline to the gate before gybing onto starboard 25 boat lengths out from the mark. Alert Packaging continued all the way to the port layline for the gate before gybing back onto port, 15 boat lengths out from the mark. Although Bango had gained massively out on the right hand side of the run, it wasn't quite enough to get ahead of Alert Packaging and they trailed them into the gate mark by two boat lengths.

With only a very short run to the finish after the gate (around five boat lengths) Bango's race was effectively run. It was all down to the cross between Alert Packaging and Sin Bin at the last leeward gate.

As the boats converged, Alert Packaging on the inside called for water at the last gate mark, five boat lengths for the finish. However, Sin Bin were clear ahead at the mark by about three-quarters of a boat length and snuck past for the win and the series, with Alert Packaging second in the race and the series and Bango taking third place in the race and third in the series.

It was very encouraging to see the new boys on Defiant and Timber and the prodigal sons (and daughter) on Sunday Brunch shaking it up at the top of the fleet with these boats leading or in the lead bunch around the first weather mark in both races. Without doubt they will be a force to be reckoned with once they get a bit more time in the boat and perfect their downwind gybing angles and gybes.

Next up for the fleet is the Westerns next weekend in beautiful Westport, Co Mayo with normal racing for those in Dublin Bay that can't make it.

#DBSC - Sixteen Flying Fifteens turned out on another sunny Saturday afternoon on 4 June for two races in the DBSC Series, writes our Flying Fifteen correspondent

And it can be confirmed that rumours of Gorman and Doorly's demise after last week's results are very much exaggerated as they were in great form on 'Betty', winning both races to lead the DBSC series from Mulvin/Beirne and Mathews/Poole.

In a light east-northeast breeze with strong ebbing tide, Race 1 eventually got going following a long postponement after the cruiser boats all came sailing through the start area, a dangerous situation to say the least.

The pin was slightly biased but it was hard to decide which way to go for the wind. Ryan, Colin, and Gorman all kept going left; Mathews cut back across to the right, as did Mulvin. The further the boats on the left went out the more breeze they picked up and they had a good lead approaching the weather mark. Colin and Ryan seemed to be ahead and tacked for the mark as Gorman approached on port.

It's moments like this that races are won and lost. Would they just dip the guys and stay third or tack below them?

With the knowledge that the tide was pushing the boats away from the mark they tacked under them and made it by a boat length, it was a lead they were not to lose despite the confusion of the gate being lifted as they approached the finish, a SB20 had apparently crashed into it. Colin, sailing his new boat Deranged was a close second.

Meanwhile back a bit, Mulvin caught Ryan downwind to finish third and Balfe and son were sailing very well to finish fifth, followed closely by Mathews as well as Mitchel and Greer.

It was similar conditions for Race 2. The winds were shifty but the committee boat was more biased. The individual recall flag went up but not many went back (they would find out later who they were).

Gorman was tuned into the shifts and the breeze and reached the weather mark just ahead of O’Neill and MJ Mulligan with Mulvin, Mathews and Ryan/McAree all close behind.

O’Neill lost out to Ryan and Mulvin but he was sailing well and on the second beat had got back to second place. Mulvin was third, Mathews fourth and Balfe and Son fifth again, with O’Sullivan and Ken Ryan next.

The winds were starting to fade on round 3 but this is how it stayed. O’Neill was deemed to be on course side so Gorman won with Mulvin second, Mathews third and Ryan fourth. Behind the racing was also very close with boats finishing within seconds of each other.

Thanks to the PRO and his team who did a good job on the day. Tom Murphy sported the yellow spinnaker and true to form they stayed in the peloton. Next up with the yellow spinnaker, after all the club regattas, will be Gorman and Doorly.

The seven Fireballs who raced in the DBSC Tuesday series last night were treated to near champagne sailing conditions. Boats launched in a good breeze in warm balmy conditions with the first sightings of shortie wetsuits evident. Wind was a very solid NNE reinforced by a sea breeze established over the course of a beautiful sunny day. After a bit of hopping around the race committee set a W-L course with three rounds of the "X3"-course, a teaser course really as that X effectively adds an extra round with a downwind finish. By the time the race was set up the wind had softened somewhat but was still a decent 8knots gusting up to 15. The boats got cleanly away off the line with Butler/Oram, the Clancys and Smyth/Fischer opting to head in initially for a short hitch towards the harbour wall before taking the longer port tackup towards the windward with a filling tide helping them towards the mark. This paid off against those who went out immediately off the start line. The tricky bit out to sea was judging the starboard layline as the tide was pushing boats below the layline ever so slightly. Miller/Donnelly fell victim to this, having to gybe away at the mark behind the chasing boats losing several places. The placings of Butler/Oram, Clancys, Smyth/Fischer didn't appear to change through the legs. On subsequent beats the majority went straight out to sea and although there sometimes appeared to be better wind in towards the harbour those who went out always retained their lead.

Race 2 was set in similar conditions, a bonus of the long summer evenings. In fact if anything the wind improved for the first part of the race. By now the tidal flow was slack or even starting to ebb and there was little difference evident between those who went in our out to see. The Clancys took the former course as did Miller/Donnelly while Butler/Oram and most of the pack went straight out to sea. The three boats were very close together by the windward mark with Butler leading the Clancys and Miller, with the rest of the bunch close enough behind. The order remained the same almost throughout the 2X (ie really three round) race. The main tactical decision was the timing of the gybe on the downwind, not an easy call in the lightening breeze and on a leg with other classes sailing different angles. Several times boats found themselves blushing and sailing by the lee in the slop as they approached the leeward mark, clinging on to the all important inside berth. It was not a soldiers race however as the Clancys managed to punch through Butler's lead on the final beat and held him off to take the race. This was a most pleasant evening's racing.
