Asgard - upright on the seabed, in good condition and salvageable

3rd October 2008

A survey of the wreck of Asgard II has recently been carried out in order to establish her condition.

The vessel has now been located on the seabed, in some eighty metres of water, close to where she sank off the coast of France, on September 11th last.  An initial underwater inspection has been carried out using an ROV

(remotely operated vehicle).  This indicates that the vessel is upright and largely intact.  Damage to one of the hull planks has been observed but it is not possible, at this stage, to determine whether this has resulted from impact with the seabed or was the original cause of the sinking. Until further investigations are carried out, it is not possible to say whether Asgard II can be salvaged.

The Minister for Defence and the other directors of Coiste an Asgard would once again like to thank everyone who has sent messages of support and good wishes on the unfortunate accident to Asgard II.
