Race organisers have appealed to boats in the third start of the DBSC Turkey Shoot to 'cool down' following issues on the start line in last Sunday's first race of the popular series.

Fintan Cairns told competitors this week by email, "A lot of testosterone/oestrogen on the Third Start with J80s and 1720s - need to cool down lads/lasses! Others are out there to enjoy themselves and are not interested in delays. So, next Sunday, the Third will start with a well-earned Black Flag".

The black flag means that any boat on the course side of the start line within a minute before the start is disqualified.

Meanwhile, the start sequence and handicaps for the second race this Sunday have been released and are downloadable below.

The first race ran with 63 boats last Sunday, but 78 boats are now entered, exceeding even last year's 75-boat record.

After a gentle start, stronger wins are expected for this Sunday.

One of five Royal St. George Yacht Club J80s, 'George 8', was the first race winner of last Sunday's DBSC Turkey Shoot Series on Dublin Bay.

Download the first race results below.

The results show different J designs occupying the top five places overall.

Another J80, Jambiya, took second place in the light wind race that featured a one-mile beat to Dun Laoghaire Harbour's mouth.

As Afloat reported earlier, it was a gentle start for the first race of the AIB-sponsored series that saw 61 boats on the water, with 78 boats now entered for the racing that continues until December 18th.

In third place was the J109 Dear Prudence, with the J97 Windjammer fourth and the offshore optimised J122 Aurelia taking fifth overall.

Results are calculated under modified ECHO.

Racing continues next Sunday at the Royal Irish Yacht Club hosted event.

The large 73-boat entry got a gentle start for the first race of the AIB-sponsored DBSC Turkey Shoot Series on Dublin Bay on Sunday morning.

In ten-knot conditions with stronger gusts, the cruiser-racer and one design keelboat fleet started in the northern sector of the Bay.

A weather mark was positioned off Dun Laoghaire Harbour's mouth, and, for the second year running, there were five separate starts, such is the range of boats now competing.

Results of the Royal Irish Yacht Club hosted event are being computed under the 'FECHO' rule (modified ECHO) handicap and will be available on Afloat.

A last-minute flurry of entries gives the 2022 AIB DBSC Turkey Shoot Series a massive 73 entries to match last year's bumper turnout for the first race off Dun Laoghaire Harbour this Sunday.

As Afloat reported earlier this week, the fleet was at an optimistic 45 boats on October 27th and at 60 boats on Tuesday when the new Cape 31 Blast joined the fray for the Royal Irish-hosted seven-race pre-Christmas series.

The arrival of the new high-powered keelboat was the first of the latest 13 boats that, since Friday, has seen the addition of four more 1720 sportsboats; one from the RIYC and three from the National Yacht Club.

The latest handicaps under modified ECHO and start times are downloadable below. Sailing instructions are here.

Further to Afloat's earlier report, the mixed cruiser and one-design keelboat fleet have increased today from 60 to 66 entries.

In a pre-event appeal to competitors, race organiser Fintan Cairns has asked competitors to abide by the spirit of the fun Christmas series.

"We are all out there to enjoy [ourselves], many levels of expertise, so keep it cool and give plenty of room at all times, especially at marks", he told competitors.

Dublin Bay Sailing Club 2022 Turkey Shoot Series has reached a fleet of sixty and now includes the Royal Irish-based Cape 31 'Blast', ahead of Sunday's (November 6th) first of seven pre-Christmas races off Dun Laoghaire Harbour.

As entries for the popular series close today, organisers confirmed the high-speed Cape 31 will join a strong fleet of Class Zero boats – including Chris Power-Smith's offshore J122 Aurelia – which means a fifth start, as happened for the 75-boat 2021 series.

The RP37 Extreme Wow, the Puma 42 El Pocko, Black Magic, the First 44.7 and the First 40 Prima Forte, all Class Zero boats, will start last this Sunday.

But, in the unique rules of the Turkey Shoot, all boats race together under 'FECHO' handicap, and not in different classes. As race organiser Fintan Cairns tells Afloat, ' there's big boats and little boats, but they're all Turkeys'.

Dublin Bay Sailing Club organisers expect its 2022 Turkey Shoot Series fleet to match last year's bumper fleet of 75 boats when racing begins next week.

DBSC has received 45 entries to date, with several new designs and boats to the capital's waters expected to debut for the first race on Sunday, November 6th.

"Entries to date are on a par with what we received at this time last year, so I'm hopeful we will have a great fleet once again when we start next week",  Turkey Shoot boss Fintan Cairns told Afloat.

"It would be of great help in working out handicaps and starts to get the rest of the entries in now", he added.

Kenny Rumball will sail in the new RS21 keelboat, and a new First Class 8 class campaign is also expected to appear in the 'all-in' fleet that includes five J80s and three 1720s to date.

A large fleet of Class Zero boats – including Chris Power-Smith's offshore J122 Aurelia – means a fifth start as per the 2021 series is anticipated.

Travelling from the west coast for the short and sharp morning racing that promises to have everyone ashore by lunchtime is Turkey Shoot regular from Sligo, Sean Hawkshaw, in his Sigma Wardance.

Now in its 22nd year, the AIB-sponsored seven-race series will be hosted by the Royal Irish Yacht Club at Dun Laoghaire Harbour.

As regular Afloat readers will know, the white-sailed Elan 333 White Lotus was the overall winner of the 21st edition.

Dublin Bay Sailing Club has issued the advance notice of its popular 'Turkey Shoot' winter sailing series that starts on Sunday, 6th November.

Now in its 22nd year, the AIB-sponsored seven-race series will be hosted by the Royal Irish Yacht Club at Dun Laoghaire Harbour.

Last year, a massive 75-boat entry gathered for the short and sharp morning racing that promises to have everyone ashore by lunchtime.

As regular Afloat readers will know, the white-sailed Elan 333 White Lotus was the overall winner of the 21st edition.

A Notice of Race is downloadable below.

The white-sailed Elan 333 White Lotus was the overall winner of the 21st DBSC Turkey Shoot Series on Dublin Bay on Sunday.

A final light air seventh race for the 75-boat fleet saw a change in the overall results, with third-placed White Lotus skippered by Paul Tully replacing the J109 Dear Prudence at the top of the leaderboard and winning by a margin of seven points under the modified (F)ECHO Handicap.

The 1720 sportsboat Conor K skipped by Kenny Rumball was second on 106 points, with Jay Bourke's Dear Prudence – twice a series leader – dropping to third overall on 107 points after a costly mark rounding incident in the final race.

DBSC Turkey Shoot

In accepting the overall prize, Tully, a Turkey Shoot regular, told Race Organiser Fintan Cairns, "We participate most years and eagerly await results and FECHOs every week. This year we had a few sailors coming back from retirement and hopefully will grow crew participation for next season. We find [The Turkey Shoot] great for just keeping in contact with the crew and keeping the general interest going - I'm sure you know all this, but it's important to acknowledge how important this event is in keeping the whole show on the road".

The 21st edition, sponsored by AIB, was judged a great success with a whole series of seven races sailed and no race cancellations (for only the second time in Turkey Shoot history).

Competitors were largely Bay-based, but some notable exceptions included the Sigma 38 Wardance crew who drove down from Mullaghmore in Sligo and Ballybofey in Donegal on Sunday mornings to race,  a real testament to the success of the event's short and sharp fun formula.

How to sail, sailing clubs and sailing boats plus news on the wide range of sailing events on Irish waters forms the backbone of Afloat's sailing coverage.

We aim to encompass the widest range of activities undertaken on Irish lakes, rivers and coastal waters. This page describes those sailing activites in more detail and provides links and breakdowns of what you can expect from our sailing pages. We aim to bring jargon free reports separated in to popular categories to promote the sport of sailing in Ireland.

The packed 2013 sailing season sees the usual regular summer leagues and there are regular weekly race reports from Dublin Bay Sailing Club, Howth and Cork Harbour on Afloat.ie. This season and last also featured an array of top class events coming to these shores. Each year there is ICRA's Cruiser Nationals starts and every other year the Round Ireland Yacht Race starts and ends in Wicklow and all this action before July. Crosshaven's Cork Week kicks off on in early July every other year. in 2012 Ireland hosted some big international events too,  the ISAF Youth Worlds in Dun Laoghaire and in August the Tall Ships Race sailed into Dublin on its final leg. In that year the Dragon Gold Cup set sail in Kinsale in too.

2013 is also packed with Kinsale hosting the IFDS diabled world sailing championships in Kinsale and the same port is also hosting the Sovereign's Cup. The action moves to the east coast in July with the staging of the country's biggest regatta, the Volvo Dun Laoghaire regatta from July 11.

Our coverage though is not restricted to the Republic of Ireland but encompasses Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Irish Sea area too. In this section you'll find information on the Irish Sailing Association and Irish sailors. There's sailing reports on regattas, racing, training, cruising, dinghies and keelboat classes, windsurfers, disabled sailing, sailing cruisers, Olympic sailing and Tall Ships sections plus youth sailing, match racing and team racing coverage too.

Sailing Club News

There is a network of over 70 sailing clubs in Ireland and we invite all clubs to submit details of their activities for inclusion in our daily website updates. There are dedicated sections given over to the big Irish clubs such as  the waterfront clubs in Dun Laoghaire; Dublin Bay Sailing Club, the Royal Saint George Yacht Club,  the Royal Irish Yacht Club and the National Yacht Club. In Munster we regularly feature the work of Kinsale Yacht Club and Royal Cork Yacht Club in Crosshaven.  Abroad Irish sailors compete in Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) racing in the UK and this club is covered too. Click here for Afloat's full list of sailing club information. We are keen to increase our coverage on the network of clubs from around the coast so if you would like to send us news and views of a local interest please let us have it by sending an email to [email protected]

Sailing Boats and Classes

Over 20 active dinghy and one design classes race in Irish waters and fleet sizes range from just a dozen or so right up to over 100 boats in the case of some of the biggest classes such as the Laser or Optimist dinghies for national and regional championships. Afloat has dedicated pages for each class: Dragons, Etchells, Fireball, Flying Fifteen, GP14, J24's, J80's, Laser, Sigma 33, RS Sailing, Star, Squibs, TopperMirror, Mermaids, National 18, Optimist, Puppeteers, SB3's, and Wayfarers. For more resources on Irish classes go to our dedicated sailing classes page.

The big boat scene represents up to 60% of the sail boat racing in these waters and Afloat carries updates from the Irish Cruiser Racer Association (ICRA), the body responsible for administering cruiser racing in Ireland and the popular annual ICRA National Championships. In 2010 an Irish team won the RORC Commodore's Cup putting Irish cruiser racing at an all time high. Popular cruiser fleets in Ireland are raced right around the coast but naturally the biggest fleets are in the biggest sailing centres in Cork Harbour and Dublin Bay. Cruisers race from a modest 20 feet or so right up to 50'. Racing is typically divided in to Cruisers Zero, Cruisers One, Cruisers Two, Cruisers Three and Cruisers Four. A current trend over the past few seasons has been the introduction of a White Sail division that is attracting big fleets.

Traditionally sailing in northern Europe and Ireland used to occur only in some months but now thanks to the advent of a network of marinas around the coast (and some would say milder winters) there are a number of popular winter leagues running right over the Christmas and winter periods.

Sailing Events

Punching well above its weight Irish sailing has staged some of the world's top events including the Volvo Ocean Race Galway Stopover, Tall Ships visits as well as dozens of class world and European Championships including the Laser Worlds, the Fireball Worlds in both Dun Laoghaire and Sligo.

Some of these events are no longer pure sailing regattas and have become major public maritime festivals some are the biggest of all public staged events. In the past few seasons Ireland has hosted events such as La Solitaire du Figaro and the ISAF Dublin Bay 2012 Youth Worlds.

There is a lively domestic racing scene for both inshore and offshore sailing. A national sailing calendar of summer fixtures is published annually and it includes old favorites such as Sovereign's Cup, Calves Week, Dun Laoghaire to Dingle, All Ireland Sailing Championships as well as new events with international appeal such as the Round Britain and Ireland Race and the Clipper Round the World Race, both of which have visited Ireland.

The bulk of the work on running events though is carried out by the network of sailing clubs around the coast and this is mostly a voluntary effort by people committed to the sport of sailing. For example Wicklow Sailing Club's Round Ireland yacht race run in association with the Royal Ocean Racing Club has been operating for over 30 years. Similarly the international Cork Week regatta has attracted over 500 boats in past editions and has also been running for over 30 years.  In recent years Dublin Bay has revived its own regatta called Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta and can claim to be the country's biggest event with over 550 boats entered in 2009.

On the international stage Afloat carries news of Irish and UK interest on Olympics 2012, Sydney to Hobart, Volvo Ocean Race, Cowes Week and the Fastnet Race.

We're always aiming to build on our sailing content. We're keen to build on areas such as online guides on learning to sail in Irish sailing schools, navigation and sailing holidays. If you have ideas for our pages we'd love to hear from you. Please email us at [email protected]
