Galway-based adventurer and restaurateur Jamie Peaker has driven across Africa, he has travelled extensively in South America, he has completed the Trans-Mongolian Express, and he and his wife Nina have raced by rickshaw from Nepal to southern India.
His sailing experience was limited to a Sunday outing in Galway before he left for the Atlantic trip with Second Star sailing in late 2024.
DIY At Sea: Timber is cut aboard Second Star as the crew work on a makeshift replacement rudder after steering failure in mid-Atlantic.
Rudder Remedy: Components of the improvised steering system are assembled on deck as the crew adapt to damaged gear during the Atlantic passage.
Steady As She Goes: The temporary replacement rudder fitted to Second Star is tested in harbour following emergency repairs during the transatlantic voyage.
What he had not expected was that his cooking skills and his great coffee, would prove to be crucial to the crew’s survival when disaster struck, as he told Wavelengths..and you can listen below
Message In A Bottle: A wine bottle bearing a handwritten note was cast into the Atlantic midway through the crossing, with the crew later discovering an unexpected response.
