Design Version built in UK
Pionier 10 - represented this design with utmost grace. Build for speed and seaworthiness, it competed in major offshore events, including the OSTAR (Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic Race) and the Fastnet.
Twice winner of the Fasnet race in the 1970's.
This Alpha and Pionier 10 is Solid Reliable Yacht.

General Overview
The Alpha 32 was conceived as a hybrid concept:
Performance-oriented hull (regatta-proven lines)
Comfortable cruising interior
Designed for dual environments:Coastal / offshore sailing
The design reflects a transitional era in yacht building—moving toward modern performance shapes while retaining conservative structural robustness.
Design & Build
Key Entities
Designer: E. G. Van de Stadt
Builder: Esslinger & Abt Yachtwerft
Production Period: 1971–1988
Total Built: 77 units
Hull & Construction Philosophy
Structural Approach
Material: Solid GRP (hand lay-up)
No core (balsa/foam) — instead:Longitudinal laminated stringers for stiffness
Inner liner + air gapProvides thermal insulation
Adds secondary structural rigidity
Reinforcement Strategy
Bulkheads fully laminated to hull
Creates a monocoque-like stiffness system
Keel & Ballast
Cast iron ballast
Mechanically fastened with stainless bolts
Internal ends sealed (“super-amonized”) to prevent leaks
Hull Form & Sailing Characteristics
Geometry
Wide mid-body (“wide bellies”)
Narrow stern
Fin keel + skeg-hung rudder
Rig Concept
Masthead sloop
Two configurations:Normal rig
Bodensee rig (larger sail plan for light winds)
Sail Strategy
Emphasis on:Large genoas
Light-wind performance
Balanced cruising capability

Performance Profile
Ratios (Interpretation)
Metric Value Meaning
SA/D 15.7 Moderate power
Ballast Ratio ~38% Good stability
Comfort Ratio 22.8 Balanced cruiser
Capsize Ratio 1.96 Offshore-capable threshold
Practical Interpretation
Stable, forgiving hull
Performs well in moderate to strong winds
Not a modern planing hull, but efficient displacement cruiser
Interior & Use Case
The concept explicitly targeted:
“Homely” interior
Practical cruising layout
Suitable for:
Family sailing
Coastal passages
Occasional offshore use
Position in Market (Then vs Now)
At Time of Production
Advanced for:
Structural integrity
Dual-purpose design
Competitive in club racing + cruising
Today
Stands out for:
Solid construction (no core degradation issues)
Overbuilt structural elements
Classic Van de Stadt performance DNA
Trade-off:
Heavier than modern equivalents
Less interior volume than modern beamier designs
