Richard Estaugh 1958-2009

15th April 2009

The UK dinghy scene is in mourning following the news of the death of legendary helmsman Richard Estaugh at the weekend. Estaugh held over ten World Championship titles, fifteen National titles, and he won the ultimate test, the Endeavour trophy twice too. He was a frequent traveller to Ireland where he had a dedicated following. An announcement by his sailmaking company Speed Sails appeared on UK magazine websites yesterday:

"It is with great regret that we have to announce the untimely death of Richard Estaugh last Saturday evening. Richard was one of the best known and most successful dinghy sailors this country has seen and he will be sorely missed. As well as being a keen sailor himself he also set up and ran Speed Sails for over 25 years helping thousands of others within the sport.

We have all lost a great friend and our thoughts are especially with his family at this time. Out of respect for Richard’s wishes his family have requested that people don’t send flowers but hope they will consider making a donation to sail4cancer or the RNLI instead. For anyone wishing to attend his funeral, details will be posted on the Speed Sails website as soon as they are available"

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
