The real potential of offshore wind farms and risks of near shore projects is the theme of a public meeting to be held in Killiney, Co Dublin this week.
The meeting is being hosted by Blue Ireland, described as an association of citizens’ groups with a shared vision to “protect our seas, in light of Government plans for vast offshore wind development around the Irish coast”.
The meeting will be addressed by Mr Bill Emmott, former Editor-in-Chief of the Economist, and organisers say it aims to “open up a broader discussion on Ireland's future renewable energy supply”.
“Current developer-led plans for near-shore wind infrastructure construction on some of the most ecologically sensitive areas around the coast have the potential to wreak havoc on marine ecosystems and destroy the very sensitive areas that it is vital to protect,” the Blue Ireland statement says.
“Government failure to advance Marine Protected Area legislation adds to the risk,”it says.
The public meeting takes place in the Fitzpatrick Hotel, Killiney, Co Dublin on Thursday, November 14th,at 8 pm.
