In London today, Irish Marine Minister Timmy Dooley TD met with Minister Daniel Zeichner MP to address key marine issues.
The two Ministers discussed Marine Spatial Planning and Ireland’s plans for a national Designated Marine Area Plan for offshore renewable energy. They also focused on designating 30% of Ireland's seas as Marine Protected Areas by 2030.
Fisheries challenges were on the agenda, including competition for marine space and sustainability in the seafood sector. Minister Dooley emphasised the need for collaboration to manage biodiversity loss effectively.
Minister Dooley highlighted Ireland’s commitment to finding a resolution regarding Rockall, noting ongoing discussions with Scottish and UK authorities.
Both Ministers acknowledged progress in sustainable fishing practices and stock rebuilding in recent years. They recognised ongoing efforts through the Specialised Committee on Fisheries.
Minister Dooley indicated that Ireland looks forward to holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU next year, aiming to advance key fisheries files.
“I very much welcome the opportunity to have met Minister Zeichner today,” said Dooley, recognising the importance of strengthening ties between the two countries.
