#MarineWildlife - Whale watchers will be jostling for position to snap shots of a rare albino humpback whale spotted off Baltimore in West Cork last week, according to Joe.ie.
The incredible sight of the Moby-Dick-like 40ft ocean giant was allegedly witnessed by local fishermen Pat Collins and Gerard Minihane, who immediately reported their find to Baltimore Whale and Dolphin Watch.
While humpback whales are regular visitors to Irish shores, white whales are an exceedingly rare occurrence, with only two others recorded worldwide over the last 25 years.
Elsewhere, there's been some sad news from Kerry of beaked whale strandings at the beginning of this month.
As the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) reports, a juvenile beaked whale live stranded at Cappagh Strand in Cloghane, Co Kerry on 3 July and was refloated, but later found dead.
Hours later a larger whale, believed to be the calf's mother, was found stranded in mudflats nearby.
Samples were taken from the adult carcass for analysis, though with no facility for a post-mortem "we will once again remain in the dark as to the cause of this unusual stranding," says the IWDG.
