Doin' 25 knots in Alicante harbour

8th October 2008

The Puma Sailing team is showcasing foiling Moth dinghies at all the 11 stopover cities. Crewed by world class Moth sailors, the mini ‘il mostros’ is providing entertainment for spectators as they blast around the harbour each day.

Signficiantly the boats that fly rather than sail are also shortlisted for diuscussion as a future Olympic class at this year's ISAF conference. We can watch out for the Moths in Galway next May!

Bladerider Moths are one of the fastest growing small boat classes in the world. Lifting out of the water in just five knots of winds and achieving boat speeds of over 25 knots in 20 knots of breeze, these boats dart around on their hydrofoils just like their namesakes, moths in the night. Attracting crowds of astounded onlookers, the PUMA Moths will be quite a spectacle for each of the Volvo race villages around the world. In addition to the race stopovers, Puma and Bladerider will also enter the Puma Moths (pictured below) in local Moth regattas where they coincide with stop-overs. Could we start a class here in time for the Galway stop over? See the International Moth in action here and the class association website here.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
