#rnli – Howth RNLI launched both the All Weather Lifeboat and Inshore Lifeboat yesterday to reports of a sailing yacht with two men and two women aboard aground at the entrance to Malahide estuary.
The all weather lifeboat was on scene and located the casualty vessel just before 12.00noon. The small XP inflatable boat was launched and went alongside the casualty vessel to investigate.
A plow anchor was set to stop the sailing yacht being pushed further onto the beach. The wind was force 4-5 and the sea state was slight. The decision was made to transfer the two women passengers to Malahide marina.
The inshore lifeboat arrived on scene and assisted the refloating of the sailing yacht with the 2 male crew members aboard and the retrieval of the plow anchor. The yacht was then able to return under its own power to Howth marina.
Both the inshore lifeboat and all weather lifeboat returned to station and stood down.
RNLI Coxswain Fred Connolly said; "We were delighted to assist the crew of the sailing yacht after they found themselves aground at the entrance to Malahide marina. They quickly dropped an anchor and radioed for assistance which was the correct thing to do and we were able to launch and refloat the yacht very quickly"
